tainted Olive oil

Hey I had a question about making medicated olive oil. I watched a video and they just put the shake in the liquid, then strained the shake out. So do you not need to burn the thca to get it to convert to thc or whats up, would that work to make the oil without heating it?

I make tincture with alcohol instead of oil, but oil may use a similar process. I simmer the alcohol/cannabis mixture at around 100C for 1-2 hours. I simmer it in a sealed or nearly sealed container sitting in a hot water bath, with the water heated just to boiling. I suppose oil could be simmered a little hotter, though you would probably wouldn't want it so hot that desirable ingredients started to vaporize off.

I did try toasting the cannabis (dry) at 100C before putting it in the alcohol, but using that method seems to make it very easy to burn off all the good stuff.

I picked 100C for 2 hours based on reading a few things on this forum and others related to 'decarboxylization' (spelling?). I can confirm anecdotally that it seems to help for me. I've only made a few liters of the stuff, though...

Decarboxylation is very important if you intend to eat cannabis. One way to decarboxylate cannabis is to add the desired amount to the oil and heat it to about 100 - 150 F for 15 - 30 minutes. The oil or butter will not be very potent if this is not done.

I have experimented with both olive oil and butter. In my experience, I have found that the oil does not carry as many of the "bad" flavors of cannabis as butter does. However, oil does not seem to be as potent as butter. I usually shoot for concentration of 1 gram bud per tablespoon (sometimes a bit stronger) and find that the butter seems stronger than oil.

bah the heat myth

theres some credence to heating it, but think about this.. how many times have you heard of animals getting into some raw herb and ending up comatose as a result? how is that possible if the material must be decarboxylated?

are you sure those are accurate numbers? no offense dr.

i thought it was right around 200f and also that it only needs to be sustained at that temp for 5 or so minutes, just enough to attain the temp with your material - this is what i THINK is the time period for decarboxylating.... for a more complete cooking oil extraction i can definitely see using an hour or two of "steeping" in warm/hot oil.

this changes absorption characteristics, changes the effects, and also softens hairs present in different source materials ( like raw buds ) that may make digestion or ingestion uncomfortable for some people.

when preparing a cooking oil like this, heat is best described as a catalyst, it is aiding the oils extraction of the goodies from the source material.

NOTE : PEANUT OIL has good absorption properties, i personally still feel butter is best because of saturated fat.

the butter is the shizzit....always comes out right and is easy to use in many ways, including simply eating it plain. it doesn't have the best flavor in the world...but are you really eating it for the flavor?

does anyone know the proper way to store unused cannabutter? refrigerator, freezer?
could use some advice on this.

thanks, Papulz.....i was told a long time ago that freezing would degrade the butter. i have always been a bit skeptical about it though. i mean, we freeze just about everything else. why not cannabutter? i'll give it a go. thanks....

freezing doesnt bother the butter, and i'm not sure why it would bother the cannabinoids blended into it. they've bonded molecularly to the fats, no?

THC is impervious to water, which is why water curing works. THC is soluble in either oil or alcohol. That's why both are used to clean tools like scissors or pipes. All you have to add is energy. Motion, pressure, heat etc. Sounds like the vid used motion and pressure in combo.

near napoli, they were used to make cannabis oil back in the days, it was a famous recipe.

My grandma (may she rest in peace) told me that she went as child in the field to crop the weed... they used the plant to make fiber, and the buds were dried like the spaghetti and then put with the fresh olive oil in wooden barrels... and let sit there for months in a natural basement... The oil was good after a week, but the more it sit, the better it is, she said.
