T5 output vs. HPS/MH?

I picked up a 2ft. 4 lamp T5. (Running a mixed spectrum of bulbs) It has a total of 96watts but claims to have the light output of a 400 watter. I was just curious how accurate that is and would love to hear opinions from some that have grown under both HPS/MH & T5's.

I'm impressed with how my young plants have grown with my new T5 HO. I've never had that kind of Veg off of floro's before BUT....

I just put them under a 400w H 18" high and they are kicking ass. They have really kicked it into high gear.

So I have my doubts about that claim.

It takes light, lots of it with a min of 50watts psf and properly grown to give the big yields. Any less is less obviously. The larger 4' 6 and 8 tube t5's will grow a nice scrog with respectable yields for the power expended.

Check Micro Grows here in the forums and you will find a truckload of info on this subject.

Happy Growing and Peace

I have one of those 2 ft 4 bulb t5 setups too and I think its 8000 lumens where a 400WHPS is like 50,000 so . . .

pretty sure on those stats but COULD be wrong

Check out the grow logs of the T5 growers. D rock has a good one. If you can do the heat and power, more too ya. But if you have heat, power or stealth concerns, t5 might be the way to go. I have a tek 48 with 8 54 watt vho tubes at 6700 Kelvin. From seed on up you cant grow wrong! simba has some posts with some interesting tubes but you will use red spectrum lights to flower at any rate. Be aware that you will have to buy more bulbs.

I must have read a million arguments. If you look straight at the chart, HPS is going to put out more light. Sure it will kick butt. If you have Jorge's book, you can read a great section on lights and penetration.

Good Luck (and check out the grows)

I checked out a lot of the T5 grows when I was deciding on lighting, lots of great info for sure. There seemed to be a lot of great results with them and with my heat concerns it was definitely the way to go for now. There are only about four months out of the year where I would be able to go with hps without compromising stealth to deal with the heat.

Gonejah, you're correct on the 8,000 lumens, that's what mine is rated at as well. I imagine the gap is narrowed slightly with being able to place the T5's significantly closer, but obviously the gap would still be significant.

So I'll give it a whirl and with the rookie mistakes I'm sure I'll make, I doubt that the light will be my "limiting factor" for awhile. Thanks for taking the time to respond guys, I really appreciate it. LFG

Same boat. That is why the T-5s are great for the other eight months. Even with the T-5s I have to battle heat just cause where I am but the results are good. Yours should be great.

Yeah, I'm just under two weeks from seed on my oldest with some white rhino and Menage a Trois (<----Freebies, much appreciated) and I'm able to keep them about 4-6 inches off without seeing any signs of heat stress yet even with them being so young. My temps are hovering around 85 in the day, 77 at night but I'm having a rough time getting my RH above 35... that could be because I'm having to really work my blower to keep the temps acceptable. But man they seem to be doing great, the oldest just hit a growth spurt and in a few days went from dinky first leaves to a couple of nodes and some nice size leaves. My only "first hand" experience to compare it to was a couple of lowrider #1's that I threw in my aerogarden just for grins (went surprisingly well other than them all coming out male, did harvest a little pollen to play with later though) but that really wasn't much to help get my feet wet. All in all, I think I made the right call to start since I'm not having to really battle the heat like I would with an HPS and I couldn't be happier.

I have a huge problem with temps but I am able to keep it down somewhat now. I solved the humidity with a kid humidifer filled with ice water. And a couple a small buckets. When the outside temp drops under 75, the exhaust fan goes off and the humidity will get up to 60%. When the outside temp is really high, frozen pop bottles ( thanks D Rock) keeps the temp down and humidity up. About 12 inches is best I can do but they does the trick. I am happy with the t-5 grows so far. I recently had to run my closet on auto pilot for awhile. The HID would have cooked them. And my latest combo T-5 then a couple of weeks outdoors project produced a good yield. Not an eye popper but I think pretty good for mostly T-5 indoors.
Post some pictures.
