Thats cause it isn't aircooled...or cooltubed Floros are way less heat creating then all other bulbs. MY 150W HPS could burn the shit out of you if you touched it when it was on and not just any burn a serious ass 3rd degree style, HPS are like MINI sun's
T5's will put out just as much heat as their HID counterparts for equal wattage fixtures, the only thing is because of their size, that heat is dispersed across a far greater surface area than say a HPS or MH lamp, which is why they are not particularly hot to the touch.
Another reason you have a higher ambient temperature is because T5's have an internal ballast, where as most HID fixtures have remote ballasts, allowing you to remove a significant source of heat from the grow area.
Yea Seismic makes a good point. Some ballasts can get pretty hot. If these are relocated outside of a gfrowroom it brings some heat out. Also there's other safty benefits such as water flodding and running into the ballasts.
a single watt creates 3.4 BTUs of heat regardless of how you slice it.
that could be a watt of hps, a watt of floro, or any other equipment using electricity in your room.
its not only the lights in the room creating heat..for instance a 13w airpump is creating 44.2 BTUs of heat in a room.
so does the T5 glow on FLIR camera just as much as an HPS. do you guys air cool your t5's as well. before buying mine, i thought it wouldn't give any more heat off than regular florescents in my house
T5 gives off much less heat than HPS, and because the light is spread out since the bulbs are so long, you can get the plants closer to the bulb.
I'm not sure what type of household bulb you're comparing them to, but they're going to put off heat, especially since its 100-200 watts for a normal T5 setup
t5's are also used above aquariums when you want enough light to grow aquatic plants.. i doubt that the cops could tell the difference between a t5 over some plants and a t5 over some fish... unlike the hids you can kiss the plants with a t5 if you feel so inclined... i have one over my moms and i'll play with the height to control stretch and nodal length for my cuts works like a charm
sorry to sort of try to jump in here and ask my own question but I came across this posting while searching the engines.
I need some advise, would be great if you guys could help, and just by reading the posts in here sounds like you guys would know.
I have a room that I'm going to be growing in but there is absolutely NO FRESH AIR supplied to it. So I'm going to connect an intake fan to the window and suck in air...but it's going to be sucking in the air of the outside temperature....in the winter maybe as low as 40 degrees. I'm going to be using t5's and HPS. I'm curious if you think the heat coming from the lamps will heat up the room to the desired temperature it i'm pumping in that outside air. I will have that intake fan running off of a temperature switch. So I'll set it at 75 and when it gets too hot that bad boy will turn on and suck in the 40 degree air. Think they'll balance each other out. I really just don't want to have to get a heater in the room. I know I know...almost everyone is like you will never have to worry about heating your room...but 40 degrees F is pretty cold.. You guys think the lights will heat it back up pretty quickly...I want it to heat up quickly...very quickly...so that it will kick the intake back on and the more its running the better, it would mean more fresh air.
