T5 fixtures

I've been pricing t5's and found a 6 bulb fixture for 117.60 with no bulbs at kk-lite.com out of cali. I am thinking about purchasing one of these to flower with. I've seen some decent results with t5's, are they all the same or will I get more for my money by spending the 400 for the 8 light ?

a t5 is a t5 is a t5, any UL listed unit in the bulb configuration of your choice will be just fine, paying more money doesn't make it work better. Be sure you have tubes in the correct K range for your purpose.

I use a 6 tube for cuttings and early veg then go to HID.

thats what I thought. I am thinking about building a new cab and scrogging with it. I am trying to decide between a 250, 400, or a bank of t5-s. I like the t5s for the low heat/safety feature. Still a week or so away from having to decide.

The 8 tube would do a great job for you, try a cabinet 5'W x 2'D X 6'6"H, titanium extra white paint, good temp control, venting and air circulation. I suggested 6'6" high so you can get it out of the room, door openings, standard 6'8" high. The height also gives a place for the heat to go to before it is vented to the outside. You need to control heat at the plants tops or suffer burning, stressing and bleaching of the colas.

If you went with HID you would have a vented hood system that would aid light distribution, penetration and intensity. To cover a cabinet the size I suggested would take 2/400's and the yield would be substantially more. Check out the 600's too.

There are terrific set ups in the micro grows section and some folks there that can be a bigger help to you than I.

actinic T5 FTW!

actinic T5 FTW!

Add some actinics for veg. That is, the blue lights they use for reef tanks. Typical "blue" actinic, aka "actinic plus" puts out a nice bell curve peaking at 460 nm and nothing else. There is also the "true actinic" which peaks at 420 nm. There is also a purple light "pink to the human eye". It has a red peak at about 630 nm and a violet hump in the 320-400 range. Go to a good fish store, one that caries saltwater. They may have to special order them, and you can expect to pay as much as $30/each. Just console yourself with the knowledge that your not wasting a single watt on useless green light.

I plan to combine actinics with my HPS and forget about CFLs. All the CFLs put out too much of that useless middle, "white light" spectrum that us humans are so fond of. I'm doing a dual-spectrum veg and flower. I don't know if there is any need for the deep red produced by the purple light as I will have 2 x 50 watt HPS, 24 watt T5 @420 nm and 24 watt T5 @460 nm. That is a question for Simba. Let me rephrase that, If I can only have 2 T5 tubes with my HPS (for now), then which two?

4 Bagseed from Schwagety's. They are at 6 weeks except for one that is a bit younger. I've been training 3 of them for 3 weeks now. They look a bit sickly in real life

Well I thought about this statement and went back to the site and looked at some "strip" type single bulb t5 fixtures thinking I may be better off making my own setup. When I looked at the details it seems that these single bulb t5's are rated at 28 watts where the actual 6 tube fixture lists the bulbs at 6 x 54 watts ho t5. This fixture is 18,5 wide so it would fit into a standard wardrobe cabinet.

grizz - I haven't priced bulbs yet, I am wondering if some bulbs are better than others ?

you can also increase the efficiency of the fixture by outfitting it with individual reflectors if they will fit in. check out icecap reflectors they are used for saltwater fish tanks. I have some and they made a huge difference.

The 6500K tubes do a great job and run $14-$16 each AND because it has an electronic ballast these babies last and last and go farther than the Energizer Bunny.

Don't expect the cola size or yields of HID with T5s.....I would totally go 400 HPS for flowering, but that's me.

How much of a difference between T5's, T8's and T12's

Was thinking of picking up some 2' T8's for my veg/clone cab...The prices for the T5's is CRAZY...Plus the T8's & T12's can be bought at the local hardware store

Thoughts peeps
