Swap fans in a MARS II

kollos

Member
Hello guys and hopefully electricans!

I have an emergency question here i have 2 Mars II in my new growroom and even with 400$ of silance material, they sound like a got damn jetplane. It sounds like the guy next door is having a nuclear facility,

I have mesured on the outside of the mars II and its 120mm fan, can i just take it apart the case and cut the + and the - that goes to the fans and install 2 brand new super quiet and super good computer fans with same size 120mm?

Is it this easy or will anything goes wrong in this operation?

Thanks alot everyone! :tiphat:

Wow that loud huh? I have their 1200 watt model but it didn't seem to loud to me but it was in a room with 2 8 inch vent fans and a bunch of box fans running. I would think that you could easily swap out the fans tough.

Ye man if u want to keep it stealth they sound like an airplane, i have a silent exhaust fan with isolation around it with ducthose with isolation around it, so my room is dead quiet, and then the mars sound like, i donno, if an xbox 360 fully loaded does 35db, i guess mars is 40db.

And 40db is hard to hide in a normal wall, then EVEN WITH 400$ silance material... wasted money it feels like when i still have to mod everything to be quiet.

So u think its just to open case, cut red and black and take new PC fan? i order 4 brand new right now, found couple cheaper then a bread and only 9db and alot of good words so i guess they are cooler also then some chinese cheap shit.

oftopic, You like the mars? i havent tryd mine out yet, love to hear what u think about em? any good yields?
im super excited to try them out, i bought 2 of the 700w. im afraid i will get dissipointed but im hoping they will kill it!
Peace!

I only tested mine. I run a barebulb 8 k room but I dedicated a small corner for it. Honestly it grew some damn fine nugs with nice crystal coverage here are a few pics in action

The last picture was when I set the white balance on the camera. It did good enough that when summer hits I am going to grab another 3 of them so I don't have to put a minisplit in the flower room. LEDS in the summer for the win! The buds are solid and dense as hell. By comparison a bud under hps weighs 2/3 what a similar bud under the led does. You might get lucky and have everything plug and play on the inside. I know these light were made to be owner serviced and troubleshooted. The company will send ya replacement parts for the warranty not have ya sent the light back. That's my reasoning on why it might be all plug and play. Please take some pictures when ya do open the light up. I would like to see how easy the mod was! Good luck and let me know if there is anything I can help with!

Got damnit my big wall of text got deleted by power shutdown in laptop, oh my god...

Well shortly, very nice pictures man thanks for ur info! cant wait to get my room going after what iv seen and reading and now your input! What did that sweet lady yield you? she looks nice.
Did you LST and pinch top it? i like the structur on her i have a pretty small room in one direction (75cm) so i will have two 15L pots in that direction i guess that is kinda small but not to small. so that structur with big long colas would be freaking awesome. Looks like you must been doing something to it?

Peace!!

Kollos, this question got asked to the company rep (on line name: SmokeSara) ont eht TOPLed forum on another 420 board. she initially had told someone who asked your exact question in post # 1575 on that vendors thread the following answer:
re: Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

yes, all the connection in the light are using male-female plug., so it is very easy to replace. if you think the fan is noise, you can use a computer fan to replace it. I believe computer fan is quiet enough.

That would suggest that it is okay to switch out the fan on your own. when i asked her in a follow up post if doing a swap out like that would violate the warranty, she answered the following in post #1731:

re: Mars-Hydro LED Grow Light Discussion

Dear Onavelzy, nice to meet you .

1,customers are not allowed to open the light without our permission. if they open, no warranty any more.
---------------------------------------------

so yes, it may be possible to switch out the fan(s), but if you do so without getting company permission, you risk losing any warranty coverage. I would suggest contacting her to see if it would be possible to get approval to make your switch.

in terms of explaining the noise you have, you said it perfectly. it sounds like an XBox going full out. so, say that's what it is. or say that you are using a few old noisy computers as bitcoin miners. or that they are the cooling fans for the lights for your orchid collection.

Sweet plant johndoe. did you use LST to get that uniform shape or did it get there on its own?

woha man! thanks alot that made my day, fakk that warranty they are cheap leds, they will not break on me :woohoo:.

The new fans will be dead quiet and better movement then this old shitty china stuff.

Thanks alot for ya post! mail office get my fans tooday in about 5hours so then i will start the small 10mins operation and make them quiet as the wind!

And yes the shape looks freaking awesome i love it just like 10big colas straight up. i also wonder if its LST and like pinch topped or fimmed, because it sure aint orginal! tell us broh!

Thanks guys!

Haha your right brah. She was trained via LST. No topping or pinching. I think the yield on her was close to half pund. Not to bad for a single plant under a LED

Good to find out that the fans are easy to swap. I thought they were made easy to service.

KOLLOS - Do us a favor and get some pictures when ya got that case open!

Nice ye she looks LST for sure with those nice branches going out on the sides! u just did some single ropes in the early weeks and then took it away?

No thats fking inpressive man! how many weeks u vegged her for that yield? long time ye?

Im going for 2 of the Mars II 700w, and one apollo 240w in the middle, and 12 of 15L air pots, im dreaming of atleast 3oz a pot, but i guess thats far from reality, but i have nearly 2000"w" So atleast i have a goal... but i guess i guess 3oz is to much i donno. but they will get alot of light for sure!!! the lights are nearly covering wall to wall on both direction so they sure atleast will have coverage!!!!! the longest non coverd area is about 20cm on 2 of 4 sides, rest is coverd right under the led.

I swapped the fans in 1 of the mars tooday broh it was insane, it is so quiet so i dident belive my ears and eyes, me and my friend where just smileing for minutes. But i guess i was to greedy, i took a fan named shythe, it camed in 500rpm 800rpm, 1200rpm 1400rpm, i took the 800rpm, its so quiet so its ridcilous,

But yes, 800rpm was alot less air blowing on the led, so the question is.... how much overkill is the orginal fan? because the new fans are blowing and moving air for sure! but quiet alot less then orginal, i regret i dident take one level up. But hey, they are quiet as a damn mouse !!!! ridicilous quiet, i will swap the next one tmr and i will take a picture for u on some how, dont rly like to post pics =/. but i will tell you this, even a kid with no eyes could do it, it was just 2 big plates of leds that u just saw the metal case from, and then it was 2 regular PC fans with one red one black. i cut both off and replaced them with the new 120mm fan, took med about 10minutes at top!

Peace!

have you tried the higher rpm fan? any issues with heat build up or light issues using the 800rpm?

It's important to maintain airflow at OEM specs to maintain equip life. Computer muffin type fans usually have a label w/ model #, voltage & current. From that, the airflow specs can be found online. Better fans are quieter at the same airflow, some a lot quieter. Cutting away stock grilles & substituting wire grilles can reduce noise. Attaching fan adapters can allow for larger quieter fans providing the same airflow, like this-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=120_mm_fan_adapter-_-11-995-076-_-Product

They carry an excellent selection of fans, as well.

...and they keep saying LEDs don't put off heat. Horseshit. I have them on my reef tanks, flood lighting, etc. Those heat sinks need to emit that energy somewhere...all they do is keep the heat away from the diode.
