Surges and ballasts

I have a Sun System 1000w switchable.

I had a power outage the other day for about 15 seconds. When the juice came back on, I noticed the bulb(center) was glowing blue, like it was trying to power up. I hurried and un plugged it for about 5 minutes, and then turned it back on...no problems, started right up.

My question is: would the bulb have eventually came back on or would it stayed glowing blue like it was trying to fire back up?

Is there something in the ballast that waits for the bulb to cool before it ignites?

Hope someone knows,

RUSH

It would have eventually come back on. Better for you to disconnect and re-start than allow semi starts, I believe it degrades bulb life, but I have no proof.

No...an HPS will reignite faster than a MH. Some recommend 15 minute delay timers for MH systems for the exact situation you encountered. A hot refire will reduce bulb effeciency/effectiveness moreso for MH from what I understand. What bulb were you running in that switchable? I liked my old 1000w switchable ballasts. Either way either an HPS or MH would have eventually refired except in the case of total bulb failure...which is not often.

A warn deluxe Sun Master(MH)....got it from a friend who couldn't grow....it's brand new, and I only have about three more weeks in veg, so I'm not really worried about it fucking the bulb up that much unless you think a 15 minute delay is DEF needed

Thanks badmofo^ and Redux!

my house had the same problem, except about once a week, and once i came home to my entire growroom dark, with all the ballast running, and 1 of my 400 watt ballasts burnt out, im not sure why, but im guessing it was a hot fire, the bulb was fine though, just the ballast burnt out

hell with that then, I didn't think they were that expensive. Oh well, guess I'll just have to make sure I'm home when a storms on the way.

if the bulb shuts off during power loss, it will take time to cool off and recharge. usually about 10-15 min. for the whole process.
no worries man!

I'm kind of a gadget freak but am not interested in putting out for a delay timer. Main thing I've seen people use them for is when their breakers are tripping because the startup amps on their multiple ballast grows is too much so they offset the startup of a unit with a delay timer.

Speaking of power outages, what do you recommend doing to contain the smell during the outage? Im thinking of sealing the plants air tight as best i can, but idk how much the odor would permeate. maybe an ozone on a battery backup is in order.

I just smoke alot of weed so people can't smell the plants in flower.
