You really need to wait till you hear some professional advice from someone like "cocktailfrank" who is a good electrician. You might want to send him a PM. I think you did OK telling them a shop with washer dryer...as long as that idea doean't seem too outrageous. You have a right to install whatever you want. However, don't arouse suspicion doing it. The electrician may either narc you out, or come and rip you off. Be cool when you deal with them.

Good luck

You could tell them that you weld and do woodworking. Tell them your welder is a mig and it takes 120 volts. I would want 4 outlets with 2 each on a thirty amp breakers. I think that would take care of your needs. How many lights are you going to run?

im planning to run about 8 1000 watt light in the flower room...those sativas love as much light as they can...and about 3 600 watts in the veg/mother room..i have about 20 lights i bought for 1000 bucks all about a year old.. couldnt pass up a deal like that maybe ill sell some on ebay or something i dont need that many...right now the plants are still in his house but his anxious to get rid of them...he had a really close call...and he paid off a neighbor not to rat on him...

JJ has a good idea with the welding angle. Lots of people do hobby welding now days.Hobby welders need other power equipment too, e.g. grinders, drills saws, a collection of shop tools.

So just tell the electrical contractor you want to put in a 100 Amp service to that "shed"(That should be plenty of power, but ask "cocktailfrank". You want to do what you have to do to make that story credible though. If the shed is really run down and crappy looking, you might not be able to sell that story. Fix it so it looks like it could be a shop... If that isn't possible, maybe you need another story.

My opinion is that whatever you do, you do not want to arouse anyone's curiosity or make them suspicious. You have the right to do whatever you want to your property, but if things look "hinkey" to a contractor, that won't be a good thing IMO. But then maybe I'm paranoid :sasmokin:

Good luck with it

thanks everyone for the advice....yeah we have some nosey nieghbors...the shed is in very good condition but i dont know why the contractors were so nosey...im not being paranoid either its just that they were like suspecious about what i was doing.. maybe cause im young that they were... im just going to tell them i was going to run a washer and dryer and use the other extra room for wood working and wielding...maybe getting some old washer and dryer of craiglist for free and just put them in there for the meantime

I would tell the electrician you want the power and it is non of his business why. You are the customer and he should do as he is told as long as the wiring is legal.
It is too bad you cant do it yourself, it is rather simple. Perhaps get yourself a do-it-yourself book from one of the big home stores. I have seen these books.

i know, i think the question is to see how much power i need..i think theyre just curious because i have a laundry room in my house already but told them i was going to turn it into bedroom..i dont see anything for them to get suspicious, like i dont have any paraphernalia or any signs of a grow..i currently have a small grow going...but i dont want to risk getting busted or having them ripping me off...just need an excuse to put power out there

Sorry, I did not see you had that much lighting, I was caught up in the fact that the electricians were asking questions. You probably do need an electrician. You need to run a small sub panel there. I mean you could do it yourself, but there are codes on how to treat the main wire to the out building, I even had that hired out. Once the fella runs the main and hooks up the panel you should be able to do it yourself from there. The voltage is an interesting question, but frankly it does not matter. The voltage will not change efficiency, just the amount of current that flows, and all the equipment will have will be using 14 or 12 gauge wire. I would stick to 115v to keep it simple. Kilns are heavier users than what you are running, so if you told the electrician that you were running kilns he would tell you that you need to make sure of the voltage. The highest voltage you can run from the utility is only 240v anyway, unless you get a tranformer. Really best to try to keep the voltage the same to keep it simple, 115v.

ok so you want to run 9.8 kw of lighting +fans ect .you must control the smell ect but i geuss your friends dad can advise on that why cant your friends dad show you how to run a cable and a couple of fuse boxes its not rocket science and what exscuse do you have for using 10 kw of electric?
if youve agreed to take the plants then take them dont leave the guy hanging.i hope your friends dad video"d the nieghbour accepting cash what a ****
do these informers not understand that karma will burn them !or i ****ing well will,my new hobby informer hunting

get your finger out dude

what voltage due you plan on running the lights?
120v =11ax 8 lights= 88a
240v =5.5a x 8 lights=44a
plus your other stuff.
100a sub would work for ya.

Hey man I am a glass blower and we run two kilns out my garage. Perfect cover up for my indoor lights expense cost. I would say each kiln uses more electricity than a 1000 watt. Just a thought. Good luck

I don't know about growin in any shed.Man I'de be real careful doing that...you'll have alot more to worry about growin it out there than you will inside.Don't mean to sound like a downer but I'de re-think this one. I'm seriously not trying to sound like a dick or anything, I've been on the boards for years and have heard some horror stories that started just like this one.

thanks everyone for your responses....the shed is not a dingy metal one...rather it was built by the owner of the house as a room for his son..so its a nice shed its nicely built airtight and watertight.. but they use to just run an extentsion cord from the house to the shed to power everything..lol...the shed is perfect for growing except the the electrical part and i figure if im gonna use so much electricity i have to do it right and call a professional..just didnt know how nosey they would be...i mean its going to consume alot of eletricity with the lights,fans, hydro equipment..didnt want to burn the house down....maybe im paranoid because about a year ago a local grower got busted because theyre was an electrical fire and the fireman came and found his basement full of plants, not to mention other things

You are quite right in being concerned about "doing it right" . I got ragged on another thread because I brought up the issue of "electrical safety". Your recollection of the local grower who got busted because of a fire simply proves my point.

That said, you can do a grow in a nice space like that if you get a sub panel installed as cocktail frank suggested. From your description of the "shed", I doubt anyone would seriously question installing a 100 amp sub panel in there. It's a "finished" space. Explain to anyone who asks, "It's time it had power so it can be useful to me". I doubt that a contractor would question it. However, running a 100A service to an old ratty looking "tool/garden shed" would raise eyebrows all over the place. That doesn't seem to be the case for you though. I think you'll be fine.

Good luck

shouldn't be a problem. especially if it is living space.
i'd say you shouldn't even have a problem.

One other thing...I don't agree with the advice about telling people, "It's none of your ******* business what I'm doing and why I'm putting in this electrical service."

The problem is that the more you say something like that, the MORE curious and/or suspicious some people become. Better to tell them a simple, but credible story of why you're doing it. The more elements of truth the story has, the better.

i would go with a 100amp service panel. hopefully your lights are already wired for 240v. are yo sure the sheds big enough for 8 lights? thats 128 square feet of growing area not including extra area to move around and for equitment.

tell the electrician you setting up a wood/metal shop with table saws, wall saws, drill presses, mills, welders, vaccumes, air conditioner, ect. look up some equitment that draw alot of power. some saws draw 50+ amps. electric dryers use around 4500watts.

i dont know if you thought of this but, how are you going to turn all the lights on at the same time? your most likely going to need a light relay or you could have 2 heavy duty 40a timers with 4 lights on each one. 8 individual timers isnt a good idea. find out what your buddy was using and get it from him.

go to home depot or lowes and buy the STANLEY COMPLETE ELECTRICAL GUIDE, and learn to do it yourself. save a ton of cash too. even if you end up highering an electrician to hook up the service panel then you could still add the breakers and do the receptacles yourself. all that stuff adds up fast when an electricains doing it.

good luck

i decided to not run this project at least not right now, i want to do this in the future but the electricians were trying to charge me way to much, besides being suspicious why i needed alot of juice in there, im going to buy that book and read up, maybe ill take a class to learn basic electrical wiring, the reason i needed so much juice was because my friends plants grow big and thick but they need alot juice to flower, i think theyre pure sativas
