Sunlight Supply ballasts: avoid/boycott (rant?)

Sunlight Supply makes many products. I have supser sun 2 hoods and love them. I have an old SS10 ballast that works fine. because it is old....
Here is the deal. Sunlight Supply (hereafter referred to as SS) does not give a shit about their customers and local suppliers. Ive seen my local shop interact with them on the phone about dysfunctional ballasts under warranty and they treat them like dirt.
Truth is, their recent products are shit. My story start with the Grow Pro dual 600 ballast... which was sent back to SS THREE TIMES. It was popping breakers... the $120 20a GFCI breaker that it was on probably saved my house more than once (running on 240). Every time they gave some BS about how this is rate, etc. Then finally I sent a major email to them about how their products are unsafe and unreliable. They tried to give me the 'ok lets just fix it one more time' story but I didnt give in. So they sent me 2 SS10 600's, and a new bulb (their faulty ignitor killed 2 bulbs and damaged a third).
Great right?

Yeah, no. They sent me the aluminum core ballasts, supposedly lighter, more efficient, blah blah blah.
They are cheap... aluminum is not meant to handle that type of electrical load especially when the manufacturers main goal is to cut costs. And they sent me one that had a bashed up handle. The first ballast crapped out after 10 days (brand new bulb would not light and the ballasts made that high frequency click of doom). The second one died after 3 days and was loud as shit.

I sent another letter to the person who worked with me personally about t he problem, had no response ( i wasnt an asshole about it, that doesnt work in most cases). They claimed that the ballasts tested normally and sent them back in the same condition, claiming that ists my electrical system...
All the while a 3 year old ss10 1k HPS ran without issue for months, and a 5 year old SS10 MH ran for over a year. A 600W digital ballsts ran for months with no problem, and my new CAP 1k swtichable has been running for months.

you see where im going...

AVOID SUN SYSTEM BALLASTS unless they are old.

oh jeez bro...i aint got nothing but 'sorry's for you... ive had nothing but great luck with SS ballasts.. and support.... i had a old pro1 system they upgraded the end, removing the switch and upgrading the plate to a vented one, for free, never had a problem with it since(2-3years?) and ive had my 3 dig SS galaxy ballasts for 3-4 years aswell with no issues.

i think you just had some bad luck, ill rub some karma off onto you. K+++++++++++ my hydrofarm/lumatek ballast is nothing but crap, loud, hot, and noisy, and keeps poping bulbs, spacificly my expensive sunmaster MH[enhanced] conversion bulbs(600w) glad my store i cool, cuz i hate hydrofarm. with so many being made its hard to control quality, especialy in china, i have to agree the aluminum cores suck, copper is the best metal for that. actualy silver, but thats too expensive.

I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with Sunlight Supply. My Galaxy is a champ as well as my 5 year old SS1 magnetic ballast. I do agree that Sunlight Supply did not do their homework in regards to the Grow Pro dual 600's.

My aluminum core ballasts from SS took a crap in less than 2 weeks. Both of them. And they were noisy as hell. My SS1 hasn't been all that great. It will randomly not fire bulbs.
Go talk to a small scale hydro store owner about dealing with SS... if you dont have a half million dollar per year account with them, they treat you like shit.

I am just happy that I broke even with SS, minus the terror of not knowing if your ballast was going to start a fire and almost losing a crop. It was pulling teeth but I got one of their RMA managers to send me 2 ballasts and 2 bulbs... but as far as I know my story is rare.
Go with CAP

Sorry to hear about your bad luck pineappaloupe, but thanks for the headsup, as I'm in the process of decideing which 600 or 1000W system to pickup! Don

I had the same problem with the ss dual 600
they dont like to admit it, but the crammed to much in that little box.
the capacitors are to close to each other and keep shorting each other out.
they are p.o.s. stay away from the gro pro dual 600, for the same price you can get 2 600 ss harvest master.
