Sufficient Light?

I started 4 seeds, each in a jiffy-7 pellet. Is 2-23w blue cfls sufficient light for the new seedlings to start with - 1, 23w bulb per 2 seedlings? If yes, how long before I have to add more light? Thanks

Hey Ds,

2 23w should be plenty for seedlings, 1 would actually be enough. once they break ground and you see them stretch that when u'll know they need more light.

What kind of seeds were they?

I've found 23w CFLs (with a "Clamp Lamp" reflector) to be just about perfect for 4 little seedlings, no more than 1" away from the tops of the seedlings to keep the stretch to a minimum.

Thanks Vini, 2 of them are Lowryder #2, and the other 2 are fresh from a bag of the best homegrown I've ever smoked - no joke. I'm pretty sure its sativa dominant. It has a skunky/piney/minty odor almost smells like fresh cut grass in the morning.

WhyMe - Do you mean before or after they sprout? Temp was about 77-80F while germinating and they were in cups covered with saran wrap in a shoe box closed. Now after sprouting under light the temp is about 75-82F depending on if I run my space heater it spikes up the temp so I try to keep it off. I thought around 80F was the max, so I'm assuming you meant before they sprout.

Also, they (tops) are all about 2 inches from the bulbs. So far the only one showing signs of stretching is the one that sprouted over night and didn't get under the light for about 6-7 hours approx. after it sprouted. Other than that everthing seems to be going okay for now. I'll keep you updated. Thanks for the help everyone.

ds45, ya got me a lil confused to be honest with ya. you made me go back and read all your post to get info on where ur at.
i did mean during germination but i had no idea that you were as far along as you are.
that said, your lights will be good for as long as you grow these plants. you just might not get the yield or buds you think you'll get. i've seen floro grows where yields are freekin great. basically the plants tell you when they have needs but as a general rule of thumb you would let seedlings grow for 2-3 weeks under floro lights and if you have bigger lighting available you would switch at that time. if not floro lights will grow plants.
and to add, 80f is not a cutoff temp at all. in germination or full veg growth, or flower period. it all depends on envirorment conditions. with seedlings i like high humidity and warmer temps. they thrive in those conditions. some will say you can grow with 20% humidity and i don't doubt it. my plants get more like 70% and when you look at em and tend to em they say thanx dude. higher temps are fine in my opinion if you have high humidity. when you get to flowering there will be more issues to deal with.
