Stretching the expensive soil in a guerilla grow

Second season. Not a guru. I want my clones (and several autos from seed) to get up, big and strong just as fast as possible. Lots of critters and potentially hot weather later. Grow holes dug in red clay. I used FFOF last year and had great results. I am on a tighter budget this year. I was thinking about taking some less expensive (Harvest organic potting mix cut with worm castings, bone and blood meal, to put in the bottom 12" of the hole and use FFOF for the top 12". Doing 50 holes and this will save a lot of cash. My thinking is to get them up and strong and then as the roots go deeper they can munch on some of those slow release nutes. Is this a good idea? if not, any suggestions?

It sounds like a good idea to me. I'd let the holes sit for at least a few weeks after their filled so the ferts don't cook your plants. Good luck!

I 'm in the same boat as you with last season's soil.

tried to wade thru the recycled soil post here but got depressed with irrelevancy ...

think I 'll just dig in some cow shit, plant some legumes on top, then dig again just before planting.

Oh yeah, and thoroughly check pH ... altho I 've heard dolomite should last four years.

cheers from the Land of Oz!

Compressed bricks of peat are dirt cheap in my area this time of year as is humus, worm castings, and lime. Add the Espoma "tone" of your choice and a bit of perlite and you have a decent base soil.
