stressing for hearty plants

Question for anyone who wants to reply,

If you have picked your desired pheno out of a pop. of 500 seedlings, you probably have several outstanding specimens. If you stress these plants to see which is the most hearty(bonus if there are other desired characteristics), will they all turn to hermies or males out of a pop. of, say, 30?

*note the Bolded text in the above quote-this is where i lost you.

some strains are more sensitive than others and will go hemi on ya if certain conditions aren't met. It's strain dependant. I hope this answers your question.

btw: if starting a breeding endeavor such as this, i highly suggest doing some reading be it online or in the library on breeding and selection, you sound a bit confused, and 500 plants is a big risk to take going into it blind..

be well, and stay safe.

thanks for answering Cap'n,

Saying if you stress the best 30 plants that are left(not culled) to see which ones are thriving more than others, will they all turn into hermies or males if they are superskunk and you are looking for the indica pheno? Hope this is more clear.

What do you mean by "left". Does this mean that you are still going to have 500 plants. That is a huge endeavor.
If you are just looking for an indica pheno I would not try stressing out the plants. Keep an eye on your babies and look for the ones that have a squat look to them and do not stretch as much as the others after you throw them into 12/12.

so how would you tell the difference between the phenotype that grows the best and the one thats the hardiest since stress reduces growth and yield?

Man you guys arent getting what he's saying.. he wants to know if in order to have adequately stressed a plant, its neccessary for the plant to go hermie...

and the answer is kind of.. you might induce specific controlled stresses, for example long dry peroids, and simply cull the ones that go hermie (or if they all go hermie, then you'll want to use the plants that took the most stress before turning) leaving you with plants that will more resistant to stress caused by dry spells...

now you apply standard genetic selection techniques to breed this dry-spell adaptation.. and using the next generation, you induce a new stress factor, and try to breed resistance to that, and so on..

what are you stressing them for, what trait are do you want them to be more strong against. i know a friend who put a lot of plants outside in in the winter. almost all of them died, but there was a few strong ones that stood out. next year its those plants kids doin the same thing, eventually the strain will be stronger against cold weather.

hey halfbreeder, there is a possibility that all could go herm on you, so you are going to want to clone all your best specimens, then after that stress them with light/drought etc to see which is the heartiest of them all. some will herm on you, and those genetics are trashed (though the clone may still be female, it is weak). the ones that don't herm are your winners. this is how i test for herm prevalence. best o luck to ya.
