stressed -- both me & my plants!

Hey folks,

Here's the short of the situation:I've got an 8x8 room running 2400 worth of sunsystem lamps. I've got a propane heater running for heat & o2. But something's up with the propane -- this morning at about6am, everything was fine but when I was visiting my ladies at 3, my propane was out and the whole room stunk to high heaven of the gas. I've got backup tanks but am concerned about there being some kind of leak into the room. Could just the gas being out have done something to the pilot to make it stink so? Should I just switch tanks?

Ugh. I'm supposed to switch my cycle to bud on wednesday, which is what is making me hesitant to flip on the lamps to compensate for the heat. (My vent sys which usually pumps the lamp heat into my veg room has an auto thing on it so if it gets too cold in there it will turn off the vent and use the lamp heat in the big room.) I just hate to screw with the light at this point in the cycle. THAT said, it's dumping some mad snow out there and even tho I've got reasonable insulation, I just am afraid of the girls getting too cold. I already feel like they're getting some weird coloring going, and am a little worried about my nute levels and the like.

Obviously, this is my first grow, and tho I am apprenticing under a great local fellow, he's out of town for a few days. So I am kind of :bashhead: like a newbie.

Any suggestions and/or advice?

are you kidding! Don't flip on any lamps! Don't do anything but get that thing out of there! This is something not to mess with. Get it outside and ventilate that room as fast as possible. Get that thing at least 150 feet away from your house dude.

You are smelling propane my friend, and you should know that stuff does explode houses. The smell you are smelling is what they add to the gas so that you can detect a leak such as this. Most other gases don't have much smell unless other elements are added as well, so you should probably get the propane outside. I would run your unit outdoors with a new tank in a semi-ventilated area. You want to be able to capture enough of the smell to detect a leak, but at the same time not have an explosion in your house/garage/face.

Thanks so much for your reply!! I turned off all of the tanks when I was out there, and made sure to get my vents on and fans going in order to ventilate it to the best of my ability. There arent any tanks on site at the moment (my room is removed from my house) and it's been airing for just a couple of hours. I don't wanna be screwing around with it, cause like you say, we're talking tricky exploding gas here.

I also am a little crestfallen at the thought of losing my grow at this stage. I hope there's a way I can manage to save it. I've got a call into my man, but he wont roll in til after noon tomorrow -- that seems like a long time to have cold mommies, or am I just being too worried?

Cool, if its outside you are better off. This almost makes it impossible to keep warm in the winter with no support though. If you have had plants left out in the cold, it works but sometimes they are wilted by morning looking like soggy asparagus. An idea is to try filling up a bunch of big gallon containers with hot water out there. This is a method they use in some simple greenhouses to keep a couple of plants a little warmer through the night. Glad you decided the safe route, you can probably come up with a way to save your plants and your propane. I know its cold where you are so its disheartening to watch this kinda stuff happen. Remember though, its gonna stink like weed if there is an explosion. hahah just joking, stay safe!

If you turned your fans off, then maybe you could lessen the wind chill factor? ( just what i seem to think ignore me, had two smokes now, lol)

Glad you're ok and a BIG WAY TO GO to Excel for setting you straight. Next time though, DON'T TURN ON THE FANS! Don't turn ANYTHING on or off that's in the room. One spark is all it takes.

Fan it out by hand with a big sheet of cardboard, open the windows, run ducting from a fan well outside the room. Stay away from electricity until the smell is gone.
