Exploding Sperm Whale: Faroe Islands Biologist Cuts Open A Dead Whale, Horrific Scene Ensues [VIDEO]

An exploding sperm whale was captured on film in the Faroe Islands yesterday, a stunningly horrifying sight that should be watched once and then never again. The sperm whale had washed up on a beach, where it sat for two days before marine biologist Bjarni Mikkelse was dispatched to cut open the whale. Mikkelse told the Daily Mail that he expected the whale to be contain pressure, but not an explosive amount.

"The animal was more than two days old when we took it so we knew there would be some pressure on the inside, but nothing like what happened," said Mikkelse. "It wasn't a shock. We had expected something. In the situation I was more worried about something worse happening or anyone getting hurt."

The exploding sperm whale was the result of methane building during decomposition. Because whales are such massive creatures, a lot of methane can accumulate, especially after two days of decomposing. So when poor Mikkelse cut up open the sperm whale, it was like sticking a pin in a balloon. (A balloon filled with whale guts.)

This isn't the first instance of a whale exploding from a gas buildup. If you think the Faroe Islands exploding sperm whale was gross, imagine the same incident occurring on a busy city street. That happened in Tainan, Taiwan, in 2004, as a dead 56-foot, 60-ton sperm whale was being transported on a truck bed. The sperm whale exploded suddenly, spewing guts and blood all over shops, streets and passersby.

Controlled explosions of whales have also occurred over the years. In 1970, a sperm whale washed up on a beach in Florence, Ore., an occurrence so rare that no one knew exactly how to deal with it. Officials decided to blow up the whale using half a ton of dynamite, under the assumption that seagulls and other scavengers would eat the smaller whale pieces. The massive explosion lead to a horrific smell, with whale pieces striking bystanders and parked cars. The seagulls didn't show any interest in the blown-up whale pieces, so officials had to clean up the mess. Horrifying.

I wanted to when younger. but Miami had other things to offer as well . lol. all that fermenting stuff can def cause a mess. remember that time they tried to blow up a whale? I seen a few dead whales over the years but am glad I aint cutting em open. maybe drill a few test holes and let out the pressure first lol
