well as stated above, I have a root problem. it semms that the roots get to 3 to 4 inches long and white as rice, then for some reason they start to turn tan, then brown, then break off and die. what am I doing wrong? the res is covered in reflex insulated tape, and with black duct tape under that. so there is no way that light can get through all that. plus then I also have a windshield sun reflector on top of that. I have even changed my tubbing from clear to black. now, the only thing that I could have done wrong was, that when I changed the res they might have gotten some light on the roots, but not for more than a min at the longest. could this bee what's going on? I ordered physan 20, I hope that this will work out for me, what do you guys think? any ideas are welcome. thanks for listening and your help.

well its pretty basic, I have 2 res (10 gal) each, but only fill to 6 gal. has airstone in each res, using a 60 gph pump. a couple of fans to stir things a bit. a 400w cmh w enclosed fixture, using 2 188 cfm booster fans, keeps room temp at 83f high, lows around 73f. RH around 40--60 percent. also I am using frozen water bottles to control temps, temps are around 62- 70f. btw, im using the lucas formula 0-5-10. if you need more info jus ask

Not that it would affect your roots any but you might want to up the nutes a bit. 0-5-10 is not a Lucas 'veg' formula, even though you've read that a lot of places. It's a low light flowering formula. You may not want full strength but you'll want a bit more than that for both veg and flower. :D

As for the roots.... I don't think that's anywhere near enough air and you didn't mention what water you're using. Any thoughts?

I am using tap water, my tap is pretty good, 6.8 ph & 80-90 ppm. you say not enough air, you mean pump size or airstones? and what strenght formula are you talking about, everywhere I look I see that veg is 0-5-10, so what do you suggest? and why? please explain

light does not turn roots brown.
There are plenty of nutrients there, though 0/8/16 would be fine too.
The problem sounds like pythium rot, the physan + increased oxygen will clear it up.

0-5-10 is best for flouros grows, not vegging. Light on your roots for a a little bit is fine. What are your water temps? More oxygen because the higher yout water temps, lower the dissolved oxygen available to your root zone. Decrease your temps = more oxygen

What's the source? Mine's from a well and I get crappy root growth due to slimes and crud growing in the dirt when I use it.

Have you tried RO water just to test and make sure? Use fresh dirt and a fresh clone or something, Nothing you've previously watered with your tap water. You may be surprised at the difference. I know I certainly was.

I have never used ro water, but I have used distilled, and seemed to make no difference. my res temps have been low as of late, around 58F-68F. if I need more O2, should I get another 60gph pump, or more airstones, or maybe even both. I want my roots to get growin again, my girls are at 43 days and only 5'' & 6'' tall. I have had nothin but problems this time around, jus bad luck? someone help me get them growin the way they should be.

More air would come from a bigger pump though, I'm having a hard time imagining an air pump rated in gph, gallons being a measurement of liquids and solids. Too small an airstone could restrict air flow. If noise stealth isn't a big concern, try removing the stones altogther.

You say your water is 6.8 and your setup sounds vaguely DWC like. In this case pH should be dropped by a full point or, 5.8. Are GH FloraMicro & FloraBloom the ONLY nutes you're using? How are you controlling pH if at all? If you're using vinegar or other kitchen solutions, that would explain much.

well freezerboy, yes it is something like a dwc setup. I am using gh micro and gh bloom only, I use ph down to adjust ph. ghp is the only thing I could remember that even sounded close, if its not ghp, what would it be then? noise really isn't an issue, so if I take off the airstones, they will jus float around freely, will it matter where in the res they end up? thanks for your help freezerboy and to all who have helped me.

Many airpumps are rated in lpm or gph. Both have some associated volume, of course.

My Sunleaves Durapump SDA530 is rated at 600 GPH, for example.
