Stealth motorized intake vent/shutter

Hey all,

So my two Vortex 12" exhaust fans were doing ok, but without an intake vent the temps were still climbing above ambient on warm>hot days. I needed an intake vent, but couldn't do it through the windows and needed it to be totally hidden.

I moved part of my woodpile on one side of my building so I could cut my big ass hole (I feel bad about this, but will leave it when I move out.) The landlord can consider it an upgrade.

I started with this shutter from Farmtek: http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;;a6941d10_104183.html

Clearing behind woodpile

The cover I made for it allows unrestricted motion of the louvers and plenty of airflow on all sides:

Stack the wood back up (camouflage)

and put it all behind a heavy duty tarp, to keep my wood dry of course! The tarp also acts as a small sail, catching the cool prevailing winds perfectly:

Room temps dropped about 8 degrees during the day, which is perfect. It's hooked to my AIR-4 so it opens the shutter when it goes over 75* in the room, and I put a furnace filter over the inside so it filters the air. I also put a flap of black panda plastic over it so the light isn't a problem.

Ta da!

I like that! nice work and thanks for posting the link. 8 deg. is a welcome thing I'm sure.

Nice job.
I think I have the same shutter on the wall of my clone/mother room.
I also put a furnace filter on the inside of the shutter.
Great minds think alike!

Indeed! I bet our rooms are pretty damn similar at this point, but I think I'll be nixing my plans to do split flowering rooms, too much to break down and hide twice a year. I'll be adding CO2 and more plants instead and just try to turn out 4 big crops a year. Thanks Dongle!

Thanks RL, my ambients rarely get above 80 so I can totally deal with that, even when it hits 100 it's only for a few hours. Where I live I typically have a 30-40*F temp differential between day and night!

Oh yeah and I'm shopping for an enclosed utility trailer so I can hide my gear come inspection time too, will make life much easier and it will basically be a room the landlord can't inspect. ;)

Thanks, I hope so, I'll spray paint it to match the building when I move out so it looks like it's been there forever. In fact it was there when I moved in!

Yeah, that's the ticket. John Lovitz lives!

On another note, are you sure you're not ANTI-LazyMan? That's quite the project and quite the tutorial. Quick, someone show this to budcapitalseeds.

Rep for you. So, there.

Thanks Freezer! Much appreciated. Yeah I picked the name to be ironic, the only time I ever even sit down is when I'm at work.

I'll sleep when I'm dead, there's money to be made every second of every day, just gotta get off my ass and earn it! ;)

You should check out my grow in my sig for more anti-lazyman ideas, lol

Is there any noise when the shutter opens or closes? In your situation that might not matter, but a friend needs some kind of motorized damper/shutter system that is near silent for his project. Would help him a lot if you could give some feedback on the noise level of this unit.

Hmm, there's a slight motor noise for about 5 seconds only when it opens, but it's pretty soft. It sounds like an electric pencil sharpener, but softer, like its under a pillow. Not bad at all. Closing is silent.
