Hey all,
So my two Vortex 12" exhaust fans were doing ok, but without an intake vent the temps were still climbing above ambient on warm>hot days. I needed an intake vent, but couldn't do it through the windows and needed it to be totally hidden.
I moved part of my woodpile on one side of my building so I could cut my big ass hole (I feel bad about this, but will leave it when I move out.) The landlord can consider it an upgrade.
I started with this shutter from Farmtek: http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;;a6941d10_104183.html
Shutter
Cut in
Clearing behind woodpile
The cover I made for it allows unrestricted motion of the louvers and plenty of airflow on all sides:
Cover installed
Stack the wood back up (camouflage)
and put it all behind a heavy duty tarp, to keep my wood dry of course! The tarp also acts as a small sail, catching the cool prevailing winds perfectly:
Room temps dropped about 8 degrees during the day, which is perfect. It's hooked to my AIR-4 so it opens the shutter when it goes over 75* in the room, and I put a furnace filter over the inside so it filters the air. I also put a flap of black panda plastic over it so the light isn't a problem.
Ta da!
