FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- We're learning more about a Fresno man - accused of stealing his neighbor's power to supply his marijuana growing operation.

Story: Fresno Co. man accused of stealing electricity to grow pot

John Ankney, 54, faces elder abuse and burglary charges.

"That's where he came in and he hooked into my electricity," Nancy Waterhouse said.

Waterhouse showed us the conduit line that investigators say John Ankney set up in her backyard shed.

Waterhouse first started noticing something was wrong last summer when her monthly electricity bill spiked to more than $900.

The 73-year old says her bills normally average $300.

So she called PG&E asking questions. "They said between one and three in the morning or four in the morning there was a lot of electricity being used. And I said well I'm in bed at that time. I'm not using anything."

A PG&E inspector came to the house and found nothing.

Then last month her handyman found this conduit line discretely placed behind a wooden beam.

Investigators say Ankney had been using it to steal electricity and transferred the power to his home where he built an elaborate indoor marijuana grow. But by the time detectives arrived at his house -- the marijuana was gone.

"Apparently during one time when the power was shut off -- he lost the crop. And lost all his plants. We did not recover any marijuana," Chris Curtice said.

Investigators also say Ankney tried to patch into PG&E's power lines on two separate occasions before he stole from Waterhouse.

Other neighbors are shocked and say they didn't notice anything suspicious going on during that time.

"He was pretty quiet guy. Pretty much kept to himself. Very cordial when we would see each other at the mailbox or whatever," Rick Palermo said.

See what happens when the locals ban your "and threaten to jail ya" outside crop ? They just steal your power to run the thing. There's more about this at the link.....

What a douche bag. Gonna pray on the elderly and possibly risk there lives as well. That much juice and an obviously incompetent individual he is lucky he didn't burn down the old ladies house.

stealing power is one of the most stupid things a grower could do. I mean if u grow u are already breaking the law.so why make things worse by stealing power and drawing more heat on yourself. And the worse part he stole it from a senior citizen.Very bad karma. that guy needs a good kick in the ass!!!!:asskick:

i have always wondered how this would work if you owned both properties. If you blew up one electric bill, ran the power discreetly to another property. Think LEO would figure it out?

So does the lady get any refund? I bet its theft by the neighbor and she will have to seek restitution from him. That sucks for her

How the hell did he think the neighbor wasn't going to notice a $600 a month increase in her bill and say something about it?

I stole power once from a community laundry room at an apartment building to power a tiny hidden veg room that I had no other options for, and I was all nervous about the $5 a month increase in the bill from my two shop lights, lol.
