Squarepusher

Any other Squarepusher fans out there??? For those unaware, Squarepusher is Tom Jenkinson from the UK - a bassist/electronic artist who started out traditionally playing jazz bass guitar with various bands. He then moved on to tweaking sequencers and drum machines to crank out some wacko 200+bpm madness. Over the years his music has become a lot more refined but it has always had a raw, heavy, freak-out vibe to it which I just dig (especially when high.)

Nice! Gonna have to go find that one now. Squarepusher has some SILLY tracks - Jaques Mal Chance (il N'a Pas De Chance) from the album "Big Loada," the short track Tesko from "Selection Sixteen."

If you can get your hands on it, "Alroy Road Tracks Featuring the Duke of Herringay (1995)" is a great little album with some kick ass songs on it.

Some classic SP tracks are "A Journey To Reedham (7 Am Mix)" from "Big Loada," the "Squarepusher Theme" from "Feed Me Weird Things (1996)" <- another kick ass album. The entire album "Hard Normal Daddy" is one of the more wholly significant of his collection (enjoy tracks like "Beep Street," "EZ Boogie," "Lost in Space," "My Red Hot Car." Hello Everything is one of his more recent albums featuring solid tracks like "Hello Meow," "Welcome to Europe," "Planetarium," and for the twisted: "The Modern Bass Guitar."

I could literally keep going on and on about this... so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks for the replies guys.

His latest LP "Just a Souvenir" is an odd departure from his 'until now' sound. I'm absolutely in love with the first track "Star Time 2"... it's bouncy and catchy... almost reminds me of Ratatat. Some of the other tracks are less than satisfying although I do like the hard distortion he uses on some instruments on this album. "Planet Gear" is kinda cool. Again it's all different... it feels more refined and more FUN. Squarepusher has really evolved over the years. I think this new album is more approachable like I could actually hear one or two of these tracks on the radio.

Man, I really feel like Tom Jenkinson is from another planet. I remember this one quote where he's talking about the music making process and he says something like (paraphrased), "I kind of feel bad I mean.. it's so easy for me to come up with melodies and catchy phrases that people just latch on to." I lol'd so hard and kind of cried a little when I read this. So much of his music, well some of it, IS mad catchy. He's just a freakin alien.

Also didn't know that he and Aphex aka Richard D. James were close but it doesn't surprise me. I've got this one track which is a collab of the two artists... needless to say it is amazing. "Aphex Twin & Squarepusher - We Are Resonable People.mp3"

Thx for the replies

Just wanted to post a few youtube links in case anyone is too lazy to go purchase or download this dude.

First is a song called "The Exploding Psychology." This was one of the very first songs I heard by SP and it introduced me to the notion of mind-fuck music. Once I heard it... I couldn't stop...

Here's "Beep Street" from Hard Normal Daddy. Great track!

Another from Hard Normal Daddy, this one is called "Cooper's World." This song definitely showcases the man's SERIOUS talent on the bass guitar.

And lastly here's an interpretation of one of his songs called "Squarepusher Theme." This one is an 8-bit Nintendo-esque remix by an unknown artist.
