Square carbon filter?

Hey guys, im hoping for some pro help here, im keen on making my own carbon filter for my new 250 watt cab. Im trying to think of ways to save space, and i thought about making the carbon filter square. I was reasoning with myslef that the carbon fitler nees to have a large surface area in order to push/pull the air through easily as a greater surface area would mean less resistance?
I am wondering about making a carbon filter that is the same dimensions rectangular in shape as the top of my cab. either on the inside of the roof of the cab and sucking through the filter , or on top on the outside pushing through. cheers for CREATIVE critisisim !! :chin: really stoned trying to brain storm on the new cab :sasmokin:

it seems like that may work, but you need a fan that can move enough cfm to pass through that. how much of a layer of activated carbon are you going to use? that will also play a vital role in determining if it would work. remember that you need to create negative pressure in your chamber so keep that in mind. thats pretty much all i can put on the table. peace and good luck Goony_NZ.

I was thinking just a couple of cm thick? but i just thought of a problem,my cab is split in two, the lower halve for clones and mums etc and the top for flowering. so ill need to incorparate the outflow of the lower cab with the top one. bummer!
cheers for the help lc00p4 , negative pressure i think will be an issue, might have to save up for a centrifugal fan i think, problem is in nz they are expensive !! :yoinks:

Black Rain. You won't like the results using that carbon filter you mentioned above.

Think about it. If a $9.00 filter would work, why isn't EVERYONE on here using them instead of spending big bucks($100-$300 for manufatured ones like me...OR building one like the link above....The DYI link above will work if built and used correctly. However, that one requires a pretty stout blower to make it work well enough to do the job.

Saw some threads on years ago on OG. A box was constructed for air to blow in the top. The bottom had 4 air filters for an AC unit. THey were taped together with carbon spread nice and even between them.

I always wondered what would happen in you bumped it and the carbon shifted around and screwed up the coverage.

I also saw one that I wanted to build where a box was constructed where one side was hinged. Wire mesh was framed half way down the box. A few inches of carbon was spread on the mesh. Blowing air in the side that wasnt hinged so that dirty air would not escape. ( in from the bottom, through the mesh, out the top, ducted out of cab.) This way, all that was needed to be done was open top, dump carbon, refill.

Hpe that helps.

Well the thing that black rain posted is only the filter itself... it doesn't include fans and what not. Basically that's just replacing the active carbon and to be honest would cost you more than just spreading carbon on one of the cheap blue filters. But it's not even the same thing as a high dollar carbon filter.

HEy guys ! thanks for the heaps of advice, Ive decided to save up for a proper carbon filter later in the grow, I just had some spots with my flatmate who i helped otday setup a 100 watt hps grow, inspired from the micro grows in the micro grow thread. I have anotehr question , can you have the exhaust pump into then out of carbon filter? or does the air have to suck through then out the fan? hope i can get my thoughts across, totally buzzzed out.
