Spider Webby stuff

Howdy pot Doc's...

just found some spider webs on the very top of my plant. I had just gotten done working on it, putting some stakes around it to tie it up, this one was leaning pretty heavily. Before straightening her up with the stakes, had to let it lean against the wall so it didn't bend so much it would break.

I looked for white spots, which I guess is the primary indicator of the dreaded spider mites, but didn't find any. What are the chances that the web material actually came off the wall, and not from mites?

I have 4 other plants, none have any webs.

Thanks for your help.

A couple of possibilities comes to mind:

> Spider mites...that is good your looking for stippling. This is the piercing of th e mite from underside of the leaves leaving white dots. Carefully examine the undersides especially for the the presence of mites. They will appear the size of pepper. There may also be eggs. Easy method of checking is to take a white sheet of paper and shake/knock a leaf over it. Then look on the paper to easily see them.

> Another thing it could be is fungus. The vegetative form of fungus is called mycelium. It appears like white or yellowish-white strands of cottony looking material. Fruiting bodies of the fungus could also be present. They may appear like black b-b like structures. Leaf spots may also be present sometimes in a target like shape and appearance. Is your humidity high? This encourages fungus.

Thanks Bv...

Thats good advice. I have been doing some more investigating up close, and I don't see anything at all like what you mentioned. I think the plant just brushed up against some old spider webs when I moved it.

If you don't see white splotches all over your leaves than I doubt it is spider mites because usually it takes them more than a few minutes to colonize and then start spinning webs on the plants... i bet that there was a cob web on the wall and it just stuck to the web...

Good luck!
