[can you think of a better name than Spew for this thing!?]

A CANE toad has survived after being eaten by a dog and spending 40 minutes in the animal's stomach.

The super toad was eventually vomited up by the dog and hopped away shaken but seemingly unharmed, the Northern Territory News reported.

The dog also lived - proving she's as tough as her owner, Darwin rugby league player Jackson Crews.

Bella was playing in her backyard in Bakewell, Palmerston, when she swallowed the toad.

"I went to feed the dogs some left over pies and pasties,'' Mr Crews said.

"I threw them on the grass and as I did I noticed a cane toad. Bella saw it and thought it was one of the pies.

"She swallowed it whole.''

He immediately called the Ark Animal Hospital and was told to bring in the dog straight away.

"They gave her a needle to help her vomit,'' he said.

"She vomited a lot of pies and pasties but nothing else came up. Then they gave her another needle and she spewed up the cane toad.''

Mr Crews said he couldn't believe both dog and toad survived the episode.

The toad is being kept at the animal hospital where staff have named it Spew.

Scientists believe hundreds of Territory dogs and cats have fallen victim to the cane toad's deadly toxins.

The toads release a poison when under stress and can kill a large dog within minutes.

Mr Crews said it was probably Bella's greedy nature that had saved her life.

"She swallowed it whole - that's probably why she survived,'' Mr Crews said.

There have also been reports of dogs getting "high'' after licking the backs of cane toads. But Mr Crews said Bella had shown no signs of unusual behaviour since her encounter with the toxic toad.

lol yes so true......light them on fire with petrol and they jump around till they go out......you have to soak styrofoam in petrol and coat them with that mix, then they are toast. I don't miss all those toads one bit though. Hi wally

Edit: They travel further each year and they are now across the border and quickly establishing a presence around the north coastal region of NSW, already past Murwillumbah.........I might have to get ye olde golf clubs out soon....I hope not though.

Hmmm. Yeah theyre pests but theyre still animals with brains, a heart, feelings and all that. We need to kill them but we don't need to be fkn cruel about it.

hahaha yea i have heard that too pheno ,, i dunno ,, its been a sport up here for a long time ,, everyone kinda feels like their doing their bit ,, but it really does no good ..
as u guys said they are spreading continually unchecked ..

i heard they are even thinking of introducing them into some areas ahead of the approaching hoard to speak , who they reckin are more potent and kill the wildlife at an alarming rate that are not used to them .. they say it might help the animals adjust before they arrive in numbers and more potent than the introduced less potent ones ...

its a shame we are at the mercy of the introduced species , the rabbits , foxes and cane toads are really taking their toll ..

thankfully we havent had some of the imports that new zealand has had , bloody shame to see the destruction of the wildlife there ,, particularly the bird life ...

No it's not where you're brought up, but how. I was brought up and taught that all life has value, and that all living things have feelings, including feeling pain and torture.

If we as humans need to kill something - and in many cases we do have to kill, from mosquitoes and flies, to pigs and cows for food, then we can at least do it in a civilized, humane manner, that kills the target as swiftly and painlessly as possible.

Peace

Well I was brought up to care for and about animals by my parents, but I grew up in a place where toads are the real killers, like wally said its a favorite past time up home and all the kids get great fun out of it. We actually used to get paid once a year 50c per toad killed and collected!! Those were the good ol' days......... Mind you, I don't have time for large scale toad massacre these days with my current schedule.

lol ... another approach to stopping the cane toad ... scare the tadpoles!!!

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23856984-13762,00.html

Kill tadpoles, scare the rest to death

SCIENTISTS may have found the key to managing cane toads – scaring them to death.

The Northern Territory News reports Rob Capon is heading a group of scientists who believe they may be close to identifying an "alarm chemical'' in toad tadpoles that could be used to control the toxic pest.

He said when a tadpole was squished up and thrown into water it released a chemical that frightened the other tadpoles.

"It appears that the tadpole can detect the demise of one of its kin,'' he said.

"The tadpoles freak out and run away and hide because they are scared.''

Professor Capon said the frightened tadpoles then morphed into toads prematurely, resulting in weaker, underweight toadlets.

"They are just weedy ... like a premature baby,'' he said.

interesting stuff there pheno ,, and yep id agree best way to attach the little guys is when they are tadpoles ,.. there is a fish that eats the young aswell ive heard ...

another interesting fact about them is they can live in brackish water also , they are not limited to just fresh water ...

and from what i hear they didnt really do that much to stop the bugs in the cane ...
