Soundproofing material. Anyone try it?

Hi all,

I was looking at ways to reduce noise and vibrations produced from blowers, and remember seeing a couple that were in boxs to help with cutting the noise down. I see a lot of sound proofing materials like the stuff at http://www.soundproofing.org/. It is kind of exspencive, but stealth is worth it's weight in bud. it comes in glue on type and self adhesive style. I see they also have it in tube form for quieting pipes. One bonus is it is fire resistant.

Has anyone tried using stuff like this, and if so has it worked well?

I made/still making something like this myself in my C24.

The entire stack is external, and from the top down: 8 inch elbow going into an 8 inch Hurricane (speed reduced to @ 25%), exhausting into a homemade duct muffler (@ $35 in parts, + blood), exhausting into a 6 inch reducer, finally blowing through my SIS carbon scrubber. I will then build a box around it, to cover the top of the stack from the elbow to the start of the scrubber. Once it's boxed in, I will fill the empty space with that spray-in sealer, "Great Stuff!" The beta testing on the the elbow shows marked noise/vibration reduction, so I am hopeful it will make a noticable difference in audible fan levels.

You can go to your local fabric store and buy foam slabs for pretty cheap, in different thicknesses too....

that soundproofing stuff seem pretty expensive & hard to get. I'd just go to HD or Lowes and get some styrofoam sheets made for [thermal] insulation, usually in the far corner by the building materials, same aisle as the rolls of fiberglass insulation. It also comes in various thicknesses (and i think there are a couple different kinds) and is probably cheaper and heavier duty than what you'd find at a fabric store.

Thanks for the replies all. I was going to get a turn key system, but think I will try to figure a way to put a cab together myself. I'll look at the stuff you guys posted at the hd and go from there. :chin:
