i recieved a pack of the Happy Brother testers
put all 10 in with my other seeds that were down
germ method was a paper towel

3 seeds popped right away and i put them into LC's organic mix #1
2 pushed up to the light withered and died
1 never even made it

i thought it was my soilmix, so i planned to put the rest into FFOF soil
checked my seeds for days now
of the 7 left
2 have sprung root taps
but this was days ago ? and the root taps are not growing

now i did scar these shells before anything else
i just don't know what happened

i am sorry KG - i really wanted to grow these
and i have never had this happen quite like this before

I have been thinking on it since you told me about it and I can't figure it out..is it possible they were overwatered and/or overheated at the same time? I forget if you were using a heat mat or not..

don't think they were over watered, the seeds right beside them popped fine - can seeds be over watered ? if so i might have to watch for that
and no i have never used a heating mat

if the medium is too moist, you can get "damp off"
it's happened to the best of us.
i think its some sort of fungus or something, try doing a search

can that happen in paper towels as well ?

of the 7 that never made it to the soil
2 cracked while in the paper towel
i seen the tap root and all was looking well (say 3mm worth)
then nothing ? no further growth after that ?

You can definitely over water a seed. FFOF is known to be too hot for seedlings and several breeders warn against using it too early. Personally, I'd dump the paper towel, too. It provides no benefit while placing the seed in unnecessary danger of mold, root breakage, starvation etc.

Sorry to bump this, but I've had a question about LC#1 that no one including B1 can answer. I think holds to much moisture for too long and sucks as a germing/seedling meduim.

I'm used to 100% germination until I tried LC#1. Then the best I could do after repeated tries was 50%. In LC#1 using peat, the ones that didn't make it always had a short tap root that stopped growing and had brownish decay, especially inside the hull.

Is that what your dead ones looked like, brother bear? Again, sorry for your seed loss and bringing it up.

For me, it's one of those eternal imponderables. How does one water a mix like LC#1 lightly but thoroughly?

i would say thats what they looked like
it's been a few weeks, but to the best of my memory yes

all other seeds i have put into LC's mix come up fine everytime
guess these ones could have not liked it ? i dunno...
oh yeah, my mix also always has all the food supply added already
i kow it been said thats to hot for seedlings, but i have found just the opposite to be true
except..... mebbe with these ?

oh i put about 6 Tablespoons every other day in beer cups
as they get bigger i wated everyday
