something in soil eating seedlings?

so i just bought a new bag of fox farms ocean forest and put 8 freshly germed cripple creek x deep chunk beans in. one sprouted and then the rest came up and turned brown and died. it wasnt like the soil was too hot and they burnt up, they looked mushy.

i knew something wasnt right so i pulled out my radioshack microscopes and i see tiny little white mite-looking things in the soil, my brand new $24 bag of ffof. needless to say, im getting these away from my cab, anybody know what they are and if i can salvage the rest of the bag?

here's a seedling pre-death:

as soon as it pops up, you can see the growth leaves are brown. never seen this before in my 6 years growing....

if you dont grow, dont answer. everyone else is more than welcome to post. :)

Had that happen to sprouting medium - might try nuking first, then adding micro/macros & test pot a few.....

Cinnamon powder is a natural miticide, I sprinkle the top of the soil when something threatened once. Also read that a pre-treat watering with ISO is as good as nuking the bastards...

Can't replace the bag at the store? I'd think they'd wanta know if they sold bugs...

I had something similar, but it took after the first set of true leaves... right as they started to come out, they turned a brown/grey dying look.... no clue as to what it was....

thanks for the info 1toke! im going to nuke some now and mix in some cinnamon powder.

i cant really take it back now, i dumped into a tupperware container and got rid of the bag. the owner of the store is a real ass and i know he wouldnt admit his soil had the mites. this is the last straw in giving him business, i'll just switch back to pro-mix i guess.

Ide either nuke the soil if thats possible... that should kill all the lil buggers. If thats not possible, baking/steaming the soil will get rid of all those pathogens/bugs....

Other than that, I would use a chili powder diluted mix to on my outdoor gals and it does wonders in keepin off the lil creeping crawling bugs off of the gals.

Tell you the truth tho, I have no clue what that is.. never experienced that before... You say they are the about the size of mites? Maybe some other pest in its larvae form?

Sadly most growshop owners are... It comes with the trade I guess... I don't know where you live, but I have a feeling it's far from the emerald triangle in California... Who knows how old that O.F. was... Have you ever tried mixing yer own medium??? It works great, and in my experience is the freshest stuff you can give yer babies... Nice light and airy mixes that are perfect for seedlings... It sure beats bagged crap from the stores and you control what goes in and how much... I feel for ya as that is a nice cross... To just watch em die must suck... Good luck on the next run man... JAH bless

yeah, im pretty far from the triangle. i have mixed my own medium, i dont really have time these days to do all that, i wish i did. i salvaged one seedling, nuked some soil and she's looking good. hopefully, its'll be a lady. i have plenty of other stuff going, im just glad i got it out of the room befoe it got into anything else.

i recently planted a sprouting seed. a few days later i dup it up wondering why it didnt break soil... that shit was hollow. something ate it. :badday:

that has happend to me also.. 4 bubblicious all gone the same way. I thought it was just i put them out in the soil to early.. But< lol how can you put them to early rite.. Its weird the edge of the lil leaves turn orange/yellowish and slimey kinda then just shrink away and dry up.. This year im going to try a larvacide called gnatrol. I got itlast year a lil bit to late for all the dayum caterpillars all that rain brought out.. So i heard the plant sux up this stuff and the lil bastids wont suck on the leaves or do what they do best and thats kill our hard work.. Ill keep you posted.. hope you figure it out.. good luck peace..

ohh it wont hurt us when we smoke the nugsz later on..

I have seen some weird insects that are only present when there are fungus gnats. They look like 5 times the size of a spider mite, you can see their head and body easily with the naked eye, and they love to sit and eat on the roots. They are black or brown in color and whenever i have had them i have had fungus gnats present.

Ive seen the larvae in the soil with fungus gnats, but these guys also make these small little critters that run fast as heck and do short jumps and flights out of the pots when I irrigate. Before Ive had them come into a sterile dwc room and there was a line of em marching across the floor from each tub to get to the veg area across the room, very odd and havent seen any pics of anything similar except for maybe root aphids.

I spray them and drench the medium with organocide (sesame oil) and it seems to keep em at bay for weeks but not eradicate em. I will try some mosquto dunks or gnatrol when/if they come back.
