My water (tap water) is pretty hard, PH 7.7 on a good day, and it has plenty of calcium. Using PH down helps to bring the PH down to acceptable level, but does the phosphoric acid have any effect on the dissolved calcium in the water???
i cant answer ur question but if ur worried about using phosphoric acid look into using this product for both up and down, ive been using them for yrs and they work great. http://www.planetnatural.com/site/earth-juice-natural-ph-down.html
that ph down using citric acid and the up uses something else natural...i have nothing but good things to say about these 2 products
I'm not worried about phosphoric acid, I'm just wondering if this alone will be enough to reduce the calcium in my water to acceptable levels...
After all, the best way to get rid of calcium buildup on taps is vinegar or lemon juice, but what I'm not clear on as if it neutralizes it, or if it will remain, or some third possibility that I hadn't considered.
I don't think citric acid or phosphoric acid will reduce your excess Calcium.....really only a filtration system will help you out to remove excess salts.....
Hopefully we can find some answers to your hard water problems....
Thanks, one of my eventual goals is to get an RO filter, but it's an investment I can't make at the moment..
I'm thinking about mixing distilled and tap water half an half (or whatever bring the PH down to an acceptable level) as that will reduce the amount of dissolved solids, and flushing occasionaly with pure distilled, until the time I can afford an RO system.
ixnay: i actually don't suggest you using an RO unit, i recently found out that using nutes without calcium and magnesium works like a charm
i use very cheap nutes for 2 EUR/300g, you can look in my thread or gallery how the plants are doing, my tap has high ph values as well, 7 and over
so when i add nutes they drop the ph down to about 5.8 and it's perfect, i use RO water only if i build up too much nutes and don't care to remove some of the solution, so i just use RO water to dilute the whole thing quicker
i also recently solved the RO high water consumption with a hint i got on these pages, you can connect your waste water back to the RO filter with a T connector between the RO filter and coal filter, i presume this shortens the filter's life, but then again i don't need 100% clear water, 0,66 EC is fine for me
you can also clean your RO filter by reversing the water flow, where the water goes out you put the plug from the tap and rinse it
have my RO filter for 3 years and it still works, and since i started using tap water i don't even need it much any more
pm me if you need more info
putting acid in it will not solve the problem, it can not overweight the Ca that tap water holds, constant ph fluctations, that's one of the reasons i failed using tap at first
