Some questions about breeding.

I have been making seeds off and on for several years. Lots of them are getting old. What I want to know is how to proceed. I have crosses that are f1s, f2s, bx1, bx2, polyhybrids... some are crosses of distant relatives, some share common grandparents.....

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is what are the benefits or drawbacks of using each of these and what I might expect in the different scenarios.

Thanks for any advice.

hmmm. make a pile of the ones you are most excited about and pop a few?
then do a reproduction?
pop about 6 of everything and take another look?
start with the oldest stock and work towards the newest.
get a dedicated tent for your males of each variety and grab some pollen?
reading your post im not quite sure what you are asking. but i think they say the family reunion is in the F2 generation.
goodluck. take some pictures!

I was meaning what results might expect from using the different combinations as parents.. an f1 is going to behave differently in a cross than a bx or ibl. I have an ok handle on breeding but definitely need more reading and practice. I only have so much time and space so I'm trying to choose the combinations that will create the best lines to work with in the future. I am trying to build some solid foundations to work off of.
In an ideal world I would have room to start them all and test the results. Instead I'm just doing what I can to stack the deck in my favor.

A lot hangs on the original parents and the selections you made. That said, the F2s are where you'd expect to see the most variability, and recessive traits that will breed true. The backcrosses will have more plants with fixed traits from the recurrent parent, but will not be more uniform than the F2s, in general. The more variable the F1s, the less these rules of thumb apply.

F2 is where the fun happens imo.........where you find the weird and wonderful .... that said, f1 is another favourite of mine seeing how the genetics combine and the subtle differences in pheno... i have been surprised many a time by f1's ...sometimes 1 side just totally dominates and would be hard-pressed to even see it's a hybrid... or 2 flavourful pungent plants produce and neutral hybrid..... real breeding takes time in the testing.... its more than just banging clones together, which we see allot these days
