Solution to the Electric Bill Issue?

Bio-diesel generator running on old fryer oil.

Set up an oil collection service for a couple of greasy spoons, buy a diesel generator, convert it to run on veggie oil, and away you go.........folks will pay you to take your oil away, and the energy use never shows up anywhere.

And it's enviornmentaly friendly!!!

You can even buy them ready to run on veggie oil...here is one on e-Bay, a 30KW model for under $7K:

You could run your whole house on that, and then some!!

Efficiency wise, you are looking at 2 gallons used every 24 hours, per kilowatt....thats 180 gallons of used fryer oil per kilowatt per 90 day cycle.

The set up might take a bit, but the stealth and the savings are well worthit, IMHO, esp fer larger ops.

Good idea but stealth is not an option here.
You realize how loud those things are?
In my part of town people are actually buying restaurants left overs.
Still, at 1.50 a gallon for cheap oil at the supermarket is half what diesel prices are.
Stay peaceful

Keep in mind that bio solidifies at low temps and any of us northerners need to either cut it with petrol diesel or rig a warming system for the fuel tank and lines.

Great idea and one I can endorse fully. Can't you get silencers for gennys?

A soundproofed box and buying a 'silent' type generator might solve the sound issue....the one I posted above puts out less than 75 db....about the same as a normal conversation.

Buy yer new veggie oil in bulk, the price goes down big time.... buying the used stuff is way cheaper.

You would have to heat your lines and the tank if you live in the north, or have them inside the garage/house.....but even still, the savings would be amazing...esp since you can run yer whole house on a larger one.

Yea your stealth won't be too great with a diesel engine running in your house lol. They are pretty loud on the road, outside, amongst other cars. But stick one in closed walls inside a home and I am sure it will sound 10 times as loud as it would on the streets.

Nice find though, I like seeing these things around, it means products are progressing. Eventually they will make sleeker quieter more afortable models if they don't already... was that the only one you can find? Also, how about a smaller one?

I would deticate getting one for just my/a grow room, not something that big for the whole house. While it may be a good idea, it does not look very efficiant, and I bet it smells real bad too consider it runs on fryer oil. Aside from your house smelling like McDonalds and sounding like your making bombs in there... it might be good :D

Like you said, this would only be worth it to bigger ops going on, if that. Can you run these things outside?

Kinderfeld, funny you mention these things progressing but the truth is the diesel engine was always capable of running veggie oil. Rudy Diesel ran it the first time on peanut oil in 1900 at the World's Fair. That little miracle is a much better design of a powerplant than the gasoline engine.

I always knew they could take oil...

lol no no, I said products progressing, as in I never knew you could buy an oil generator to run electricity in your house, made from a diesel engine. This makes me think perhaps in the future or now, there is a smaller more efficiant version, maybe one that doesn't require a huge diesel engine to run...I am sure there is a way, and if there isn't there will be some day...

Also if it were possible you could take the smelling of the oil away, by stripping whatever compounds make it smell... I have no idea how you would do this but they are just ideas to play with....

It is a good idea, I just think we are advanced enough to go further with this idea...I mean hauling a diesel engine into your home feeding it vegtable oil every so ofter...I just can't see it beign very efficiant or economical.

Check the diesel generators at the bottom section of this page......4.5 to 6.5KW, under $3K, and they come in sound-proof enclosures, some have remote starters and are programmable.

50 gallons gives you 10 days run time.

Installing it in a garage with a small exhaust should be easy enough.....build a sound-proof cab for it if it is still too loud.

Anyone want to do the math on this? I spend about $40.00 in 10 days on electricity. Or does it just pump out 30k altogether and whther it is used or not does not effect the oil gallon intake? In other words, if I have the generator running, but nothing using electricity will it still use oil? "10 Days run time"- whether your using electricity or not? Or is that for the 'Average' house usage...but how is that calculated/determined?

Somehow I have a feeling that 50 gallons of oil will cost me about the same.... but I am asking because I really don't know how much oil (if there is even a 'right kind') is and what not. Although I do realize that 40$ every 10 days in electricity is a lot less than the normal household.

Nice links, I assume these were originally created for mobile homes, now the diesel engine kind of makes sense.

50 gallons for 10 days run time is for a 4.5kw genny, at half load.

So you are going thru 100 gallons every 10 days to run 4 1K lights.....

I am sure you can find used fryer oil at well under 40 cents a gallon..... you could prob get buy a 55 gallon drum off a restaurant (which has to pay to have it disposed of, usually) fer $20.

I never said it is a perfect solution, but for those who have the space and the access to old fryer oil, it could be very very good.
