If your after taste and quality.
Use nutes in your soil.
Like the moonshine mix or my mix.
But if your after more yield and not quite as tastey buds.
Soilless mix with top feeding is what you want to do.
From my experience this mix has been working wonders for me.
1/3 Happy Frog(or Ocean forest)
1/3 light warrior
and 1/3 chunky perlite.
Then I add 1/2 - 1 tablespoons of fruit n flower per gallon of soil.
Then mix it all up.
My plants have been loving this.
And it isn't that expensive.

One thng I really likie about this mix is it doesn't allow Knats to live in it really.
hardly any compared to everything else I've tryed.
You need to water more often with my mix.
Which is something I like also.
Every 2-3 days they need water.
I've used some mixes that didn't need water for a good week or week and a half.

Oh and don't forget starting with a freshly made compost and perlite is a nice way to start too...

Then recycle year after year :)

i, too, am trying to understand this soil/soiless business ...jack, are you saying that a mix of ordinary compost and perlite will take a plant from seedling to finish ? what ratio ? no additional feeding necessary ?
