hey was just wondering what is a good brand of soil to use for my frist grow to start off with? I head foxfarm ofps is good but its deffently not cheap. was also wondering what are other good brands that I could go with that are less just incase my local hydro store does not have any foxfarm ofps.

If you plan on feeding with organic nutes I recommenced Pro Mix....there's also a soil mix thread with a variety of combos also...^^^ Look above...

My first grow I used Fox Farm Ocean Forest which turned out too hot (too much fertilizer in it). I didn't know and of course fried some seedlings. I agree with ThaMagnificent that ProMix works good. Anywhere around $22 is the growing rate per bag of any kind of soil around here. Is there a very good hydroponics supply store nearby around there? Sometimes they can give you advice. I grow organic and reuse my mix by adding ammendments.

foxfarm is trash, i would never use it. roots organic soil is pretty good as far as bagged soil is concerned...

most bagged soil will come with bugs (root aphids, fungus gnats, etc.) and you will need to deal with that accordingly. I highly recommend creating your own soil out of peat moss, compost, pumice (or perlite or rice hulls) and then amending it with glacial rock dust, kelp meal, crab meal, etc. This will be much more rewarding and cheaper in the end. If you have to buy bagged soil, I'd say try to find roots organic, and then throw in some neem cake or mosquito dunks to deal with the fungus gnats you are going to have...good luck :)
