soil, plant food, ferts, Ahhhhhh

Ok so im pretty new to all this. is plant food and fert. the same thing? I have some organic potting soil that i started some seeds in, I dont think it has any food in it so i bought a bag of organic plant food and mixed a little in, 5-3-3 i also put a little blood meal in it 12-0-0, no is this stuff the same as fert or is it completly diffrent. the only hydro store is 2 hr away so if there is anything i can get a homedepot or lowes what should i get for veg, and flower???

It's fertilizer...plant food is fertilizer and vice versa.

Go to the hydro store or order online some PBP or Fox Farms or Gh.

i am planning to go to the hydro store this weekend but dont know what i need to get. I was reading blazoneup's thread and the soil mix he uses he just uses plane water the whole time, that is what i want to do, but i dont know where to get the promix he used, the hydro store is wormsway and they dont have it, is there an equilent i could use???

Pro Mix is a basic soiless mix containing peat, perlite and lime. You can make your own or use what you can find at home depot or lowes. I use Lambert peat and mix my own potting mix.
You should be careful planting seeds in a well amended mix. It could be a little hot (to much fert) for them and burn them. I'd recommend not adding anything else to your mix that you are starting seeds in and getting some more potting soil. You can then amend that soil and let it cook for a while. When your plants get bigger, transplant into your amended soil.
My recommendation would be bone meal, blood meal, and kelp meal be added to the mix along with Black Cow or Mushroom Compost. I'd then either buy Pure Blend Pro Blooming for soil and Cal Mag+(or equivalent at Worms Way) or buy Black Hen Chicken Manure along with MaxiCrop and BlackStrap Molasses to brew your own teas. It is really quite simple.

Why not try Fox Farms Light Warrior...has all sorts of michorizie and humic acids and beneficial microbes in it.

Get some Eartworm castings,and well the fertilizer is up to you,you can go many different routes.

You could use dry fertilizers and go 100% organic using organic teas or plain non chlorinated water.

You could use a plethora of one,two and three part organic,organic based and hydroponic fertilizers and additives.

You could use dry ferts and go 100% organic using organic liquid ferts when needed (or make your own teas).


I like to use potting mix and fox farms Grow Big for veg and Tiger bloom + additives (Open Seasame,Beastie Blooms,Cha-Ching) for flowering.Works great.You can start out with a dilute dose at first,like 1/4 recommended strength and see what the plants like (heavy or light feeders).Also you can follow the 12 week soil feeding chart......





I like using liquid ferts and their water soluble additives becuase you know how much your giving them and can add more or give less if and when needed where as if you add too much dry ferts to your soil you can/will burn your plants.

I plan on doing an organic grow sometime soon becuase there is a plus side to using dry ferts....if you add to little you can always touch up with a good store bought or home made organic tea or liquid organic ferts!

so if i am going to use liquid ferts do i not add anything to my soil, or do i still mix in the blood, bone meal.

Well it depends which way you want to go...

Dry ferts in the soil and using liquid ferts once the soil has been depleted of it's nutrients or just go with soil and some dolomitic lime (to buffer pH).The use just liquid ferts,no dry ferts.

Also if you get Fox Farms Tiger Bloom and flowering additives be sure to get a GH liquid pH test kit and some pH up and Down.
