yup CC knows

i spray my plants with neem oil, and i spray the soil. i put couple drops of pure neem oil on top of the soil. and then spray some more on soil. work for me very well.
next time make sure you use dif soil mix. dont use the soil from outside if you do indoor. you will get all kinds of bugs.

Have you thought about perlite for a soil grow? Cheap and works very easily. Just layer enough on top so adults cant reach the soil and larva cant reach the air.

1 Teaspoon (5 ml.)

1 Teaspoon (5 ml.)

to a Quart (liter) of water ought to do the trick for ya' as a soil drench. Apply weekly as need be.

A couple few drops of dish-soap will help emulsify the oil into solution. Don't use detergents labeled as "antibacterial", they contain the chemical "triclosan" which will basically terminate the biological activity in your soil (given a high enough concentration/ buildup). I use a brand of your basic plain ol' liquid dishsoap called "Joy" for such purposes.

:)

Insects ingesting neem oil take about 3-14 days to die, so there is no immediate result after treatment.
The great benefit is the prevention of future generations of insects.
It is said to be fairly specific in attacking insects with piercing or rasping mouthparts.
Unless beneficial insects like spiders, lady beetles, certain wasps, etc. come indirect contact with spray, it does little to diminish their numbers.

Safer Insecticidal Soap

Safer Insecticidal Soap

Is very good stuff, I spray them together outside on my vegetable garden. Good organic/natural style product. If ones has safers handy, it will work well also.
Many crops have been brought in by many gardeners using safer soap exclusively, at least till they find out about the safety and effectiveness of Neem. :) ...

Thousands of soaps are manufactured from hundreds of different fatty acids and a variety of inorganic bases.

However, only a few of these soaps are effective insecticides.
Insecticidal soaps available are made from potassium salt of oleic acid which is present in high quantities in olive and other vegetable oils.

Insecticidal soap physically disrupts the insect's outer protective layer (cuticle/exoskeleton) and causes the insect to dehydrate.

Now that is what we call justice to those insects that are sucking the sap out of our plants!!!

"DIE YOU LITTLE SUCKERS!" is the Official Battle Cry when using these products. :D

GNATROL...Thats also very good stuff...

GNATROL...Thats also very good stuff...

I've heard nothing but good things about it. The better hydro supply places online seem to all stock it. :)

GNATROL
(product decription...directions.)

"Superior Control of Fungus Gnats & Shore Flies"

GNATROL Active ingredient:
Bacillus thuringiensis, subspecies Israelensis 600 International Toxic Units (ITU) per mg.

For the control of Fungus Gnats & Shore flies.
Use as a spray or soil drench.
Apply to breeding areas.
To control pest populations regular applications are recommended.

Adult fungus gnats spread fusarium & verticillium, while their larvae appears to transmit pythium. It does not control adult fungus gnats. Most of the insects' life span is spent as larvae and pupae in organic matter or soil, so most control methods target the immature stages, not the mobile and short-lived adults.

Standard dilution rate ; 1 - 2 tsp/ gallon of water. ( 16 - 32 oz /100 gals). For heavy infestations, use from 4 - 8 tsp / gal ( 2 - 4 qts /100 gals).

:)

gnatrol is top notch in my book.
but for those who are in a pinch and dont have ready access to hydro shop another souce of baccillus thuringenensis *sub* israelensis is mosquito dunks.
you can either dissolve them in water or break into pieces and jam those pieces into the soil.

only drawback is not knowing the exact dosage. but when you use the pieces in the soil it is basically a slow release every time you water.

alot people just the answers i need to read again
thanx chucky
have you considered the green sand found in local gardening shops, i use perlite personally but i remember reading on overgrow that green sand stopped them completly. the perlite confusses them some still may find way into soil and out. if your not infested real bad perlite works great, otherwise the green sand about 1 inch ontop of soil stops them from what i read on OG.

i did use a no pest pest strip for few days once also worked like a charm, had soil gnats in my 2 bags ago Fox Farm ocean forrest soil wasnt happy to see them in that soil lol. ive gone through 10 bags of FF soil and only had it happen once :) would get them often with cheaper soils. another problem ive had with cheaper soils is mold if i dont use it all at once. the FF soils last me this bag is 5 wks and still no mold i open when soil is needed then reseal with bread twisty tie
