you can but it almost defeats the object... im no pro but the objective is tyo keep an even canopy and plants from seed even though the same strain are different phenotypes. meaning different nutrient needs and height because of genetics.. it can be done fine im jus giving my 2 cents.. if your set on using seeds then id say do it in coco 11l pots. one plant per pot with maybe like 2-3 weeks vegging time to give them a few side branches and a bit of mass but still keeping the typical sog flat (ish) canopy... i started my first sog yesterday they are in their first dark period.. all clones from the same la woman with no vegging time.. but simple answer is yes you can do sog from seeds i guess... hope this helps
I wouldn't do a SOG from seeds, far better using female clones. Use the seeds to grow mother plants. Take clones off these plants then sex the clones to determine which are male or female. Throw out the male plants and keep the females as mother plants. Take clones off the mother plants and start SOGGING.
I grow SOG'S, female clones in at 4 per sq/ft in a 3x3 ebb/flow tray under 1000W, a total of 36 clones in the tray. I grow single cola style. Having mother plants guarantees you have female plants all genetically identical.
You can do a SOG from seed, but it kind of defeats the purpose. You will end up fighting a constant battle of re-organizing your stretching plants to try optimize the uneven canopy profile...relatively easy when it comes to soil pots, you put the short plants under the light, tall ones on the edge, but this can be a pain in the ass when it comes to hydro flood tables, it involves constantly tying them down as they stretch, and you will end up with a jungle of green more than a sea...This is not the road you want to go down, I know from experience dude.
Also, when it comes to flowering it's my understanding that you have to veg until the plant has pre-flowers that indicate that it is sexually mature...these will be pistils-commonly known as "red hairs" (though they will be white) found at the base of the branches and main stem, they will usually appear on the top nodes first. This is another reason why people clone (besides maintaining an even canopy), the cuts are sexually mature from the get-go so after the clones are fully rooted (1-3 weeks) you can flower in 2-3 weeks if that's what you want. That's what would be ideal for SOG...you wouldn't want to veg them too long as when you flip to flower they will stretch to at least double their height, sometimes more (3-4 times) depending on strain.
With seeds what I would suggest is grow a few (at least 10 if space allows, 16 would be a good number) and then take a few cuts from every plant, label them numerically and then veg them all separately while you flower the originals. By the time the originals flower ( 8-9 weeks) your cuts will have vegged to the point they will be mothers capable of giving you many clones. Then you can determine which plant(s) was/were your favorite(s) from the original batch and then choose that/them as your clone mother(s), and do a SOG proper from that point on.
You will probably want to keep more than one mother vegging so you can switch it up run to run, even the best strains can get boring after a while. I suggest getting some cloning experience under your belt before you have entire crops depending on your cloning skills. It's relatively easy, and there's a ton of info out there on subject, youtube that shit.
my very first grow was sog from seed,or what was an attempt to sog. i ended up with a very uneven canopy that needed bending here and tying there.
i think HIGHCOUNTRY's technique and style is my favorite. classic set up and proven method that delivers. i hope to mimic something similar in the future.
if you do sog from seed, be sure to flower sooner and dont top. go hydro in clay pellets with 4 plants per sq ft, do light defoliation if needed to help air circulation and keep humidity down. some strains have a really high leaf to calyx ratio and will be dense and gnarly in sog. good luck
I sogged from seed...but she is a femmed seed...and a sativa to boot. I only have 15" for my plant. Its been a fight but she's turning out well:
Then she met Mr Screen:
Day 74 12/12:
You could but after the stretching period at the beginning of the flowering phase you would need to arrange the plants placing the shorter below the light and the taller on the outer side.
With clones you get a uniform growth which is easier to manage in long-scale grows.
you may get away with sogging some short indicas from seed that reach sexual maturity fast. more sativa dom and stretchy hybrids might reach 6 ft tall even if you went 12/12 from seed.
