Society: Hint another Philosophy Thread

Well seeing as the thread on truth, at least it started as such, was so successful I thought I'd steer some discussion towards society. Much like discussions in Plato's Republic we shall discuss how society SHOULD be run. I will start but saying society should have law.

it should not be...thats the problem we are like dogs at the dog track chasing a fake rabbit which we will never catch

the only thing that matters is what we are taught not to acknowledge...each other and the one of humanity...to much division and not enough addition

Wow, good topic. Truth is easy. Society is way more complicated, because so much of it is based on lies, sometimes necessarily.

^Do you think if society didn't exist humans would still find a way to destroy the planet?

Once every generation is able to interact online, a virtual government consisting of one person one vote, with the freedom to vote or not vote on any subject will be possible. Each law to be passed, each decision to be made, can be made by those with an interest in it, and therefore some knowledge of it. Representations could be left to view, so that all sides of the topic can be heard. The administration of this should be transparent so that mistakes can be tracked to individual civil servants, and those with a record of repeated mistakes should not be given difficult tasks. I tend to think that a weighting system for the value of an individuals vote would be a good idea based upon their level of intelligence, but that then opens the door to corruption of the testing system.

if we all acknowledge the balance of things we would have society not just the way it is now...reality is so far from us it would have to smack us in the head for us to realize...world war will cause that smack in the head...when you have no power and only nature can you only then realize how good we could have it...our technology has surpassed our humanity for sure...stupid childish games of monopoly we play...we sure are intelligent arent we...as for the planet it will destroy us before we it

I think people should be taught more about compassion and acceptance of other races/creeds/religions so that humanity can finally get its gears rolling in technological advance to cure disease and start inter planetary colonisation, otherwise humanity is doomed. Imagine if scientists government and private where able to unify from all parts of the world. Do you know how fast we would be able to solve the worlds problems? But do you know what prevents this!? Money and its evil couterpart Greed.

Let me add, society as a whole should start looking at the big picture. We have been inhabiting this planet for hundreds of thousands of years. And all that has been going on is violence and war. Do you think we would of learned over time? I guess not. Look around Humanity! Homo Sapiens and Earth are a grain of sand in a desert. Really what do we have to show for our existance except bloodshed and maybe the ISS? Because really our advance as a civilization has grinded to a halt, for crying out loud we have been using internal combustion engines for look at how long... this shit was made to replace the horse and buggy! We all came from the same seed if you really look at it. Time do make some progress....

With luck, we'll have direct democracy thanks to the internet in another 100 years or so. Don't let anybody tell you the technology isn't out there or it's too complicated or unstable or unsafe. Bullshit, I say. They're scared, that's all. I understand. I would be too.

What about the social contract? She's four hundred years old and getting quite long in the tooth, wouldn't you all agree? How will contemporary thinkers and society go about transcending the social contract for the purposes of both security and liberty in the future? Will it happen? Don't even say it's impossible. I don't believe that for a second; it's not like we're talking about transcending the covalent bond here. ;-) Most importantly: How?

I think the state of nature is anarchy, and it was this state which persisted for millenia prior to the origins of man, and it is this state which has persisted for the duration of the experiment the philosophers refer to as the modern nation-state; and this state, this state of anarchy, will persist long after that failed experiment crumbles and arbitrary governments as we know them cease to exist. How long do you think it will take? 800 years? 1000 years?

Society ought to be organized exactly as it is: Everyman operates for himself, everyman helps every-other-man as he sees fit, everyman consents to arbitrary death by the Other, whether he likes it or not. I could be wrong! Tell me why!
