Soaking seeds in water

Hi friends, I was wondering for those that do this. How many days will you give them if they don't split? I have a hand full of Purple Trainwreck seeds from Humboldt that have been sitting for 3 days, an nothing yet. Dude that gave them to me said they were a year and a half years old but have been stored in a pill container, they look beautiful dark with stripping but they are kinda on the small side. Thanks

how warm is the water?
I recently sprouted seeds from 1998 and 2004 , only 2 sprouted from one set of 10 , took 4 days at 80 - 84 f, then 2 more days in soaked sterile pads to send out a plantable tap root.
the other batch of 10, I got 4 and it took 6 days at 84f , 2 took off and the other 2 are starting to break the surface a week later.
edit to add what I forgot to mention :
I'd think newer seed would be a lot easier than the slow boat my old and older seeds took LOL

I don't usually go past 24hrs soaking, then transfer to paper towel in tupperware until taproots 1/4"+

I have just my first seeds growing and all sprouted . I asked some garden ethusiasts about soaking and germinating in general. They said that overnight is good for hard seeds, but moist soil works always well :) It just takes a little longer.

Putting them in a warm place will help. Once the seeds sink then they have absorbed enough water to start germinating. I'd pot them up in soil an wait to see.

I wouldn’t soak more than 24 hours, if even that, they need oxygen. I use moist paper towels in a warm place.

I soak for 24 hours, check for weight/density by poking the floaters with a chop stick (seeds ready to plant should sink), put them in a flat of moist native soil, keep the flat covered with a dome under floros (helps to keep the flat warm), and wait.

I'm trying to sprout a bunch of different strains this year (14, to be exact) so I used an ice cube tray to soak them in. I had to make a grid map so I could label everything when it came time to plant the seeds, but it helped keep everything organized and I didn't have to use 14 separate cups to soak them all.

That ice cube tray is brilliant idea, thank mate! I will soon start my outdoor seeds and I already worried about the space. I think I also try printing labels on a sticker-sheet for easy organization. The spots are anyways one strain only so the labels don't need to be weather proof.

I letter Them be appx. 24 h...in 24c water..those which sink to the bottom goes into wet paper towl until taproots show and then into moist Earth. Works great.. But old Seeds take longer even though they sink to the bottom..

I was reading Soma style and he recommends to soak seeds in a cup until the tap root appears, and than plant in moist soil with no dome, just keep moist. I was talking with BOG last week, I was having some germination issues, and he recommended, after letting seeds soak, place in moist soil; I use rapid rooters for hydro,; and let sit no light or dome, just room temperature and natural sunlight. it works for me. peace

I'm on the edge. Of what I'm not sure.

Sunk or not after 24 hours you are risking drowning your seed.

After 24 hours everybody, even the floaters, go into a tray with a dome, kept warm, moist, covered and under not to bright a of a light until they break the surface and shed their shell and the cotyledons open.

I put mine in water over night and next morning I put in paper towel in warm place. 24hrs later I have a tap root and I plant.
I know it's simpler to plant straight into soil but I don't like not knowing what's going on,if the seed has even split. I tend to end up digging the seed out to check. I'm an impatient fool like that.
I like the method I use because I can see stuff happening as I go through the stages. I know the seed has started to germinate when it sinks, I can see the root before I plant and 9 times outta 10 I know my seed will pop up 48hrs after planting.

I had a 14 pack of Sour Bubble from BOG my buddy purchased at the Emerald Cup last year i think or 2 years ago. 12 of the 14 cracked in a cup of water but i had them sit for 3-4 days so the tap root would get a bit longer. of the 12 only 7 came up. Of my other 15 seeds random's, i used the same technique waited 3-4 days till planting all 15 came up. Those were Phantom, Critical Kush and Blueberry X Mr. Nice. Check that now that i looked at my calendar i gave them 5 days in a cup of water.

i soak in dixie cups with an eighth to a quarter inch of bottled water for 24 to 36 hours. after that i plant regardless of germination. I personaly believe the whole paper towel gig is not needed. dont wait too long to plant. a giant root popping out on a paper towel is all bad.

every time i put em in water for at least 12h (sometimes its a week, all good still gem) they work perfectly

paper towels, cubes, dirt blabla sure but some fail too (too many external factors wil mess things up, keep it simple)

I forgot to mention, if seeds don't sink in 24 hours. I usually just give them a poke, and i guess the ones that are good did sink
