So when does veg time actually start?

Folks always atalk about how long they veg a plant before flowering it . Exactly when does the veg time start? Is it from the time the seedling breaks ground or does it start later, once the plant has gotten to a certain node?

The Marijuana Horticulture book buy Jorge Cervantes says Veg starts abot 3 weeks after a seed germinates, do you all agree?

what's the consensus on when veg starts?

i have some plants that are about 4 weeks old since they broke ground. Despite some ph problems they are all growing good. Breeder recomends veggin for four weeks, but they're only like 3 inches tall at the most and don't look like they're anywhere near reaedy to have clones taken from em.

I think most peeps count it from the time they break the ground...I do anyway.

But...there is a cpl. weeks where they are just "seedlings", and I've often thought that it shouldent count until they were on there second node or so.

kind of like flower time....most start counting from the time you switch to 12/12, but some say it makes more sense to start counting from the time you see pre-flowers.

I think its best to start counting from a point that is definate for everyone tho... like when they break ground or when you switch light schedule....everything else is subjective

they should be bigger then 3 inches after 4 weeks imo...
how big are your pots?...coz growth depends on containerspace and lumensoutput....
much rootspace and light = big plants in veg and flower....little containerspace and little light = small plants......ohw yea ...and bigger pots wont help if you have little lumens output...

Id say as soon as it develops its first "real" flowers (after the cotyldones)

Yeah this Thursday will be the 4th week since breaking ground for most of them. I didn't exactly measure but they're somewhere aroung 3 or 4 inches i'm guessing. THe floros sit right on top of em so no real stretching Most are on They're 7th or 8th internode and most have side branching developing, but the branches don't look like they're ready to have clones cut from em. I'm thinking of just putting them into flower in the next week or so under the hps and hopefully there will be enough good branching to cut clones from before they get too far into flowering.

my first real grow, I think I may let em veg under the hps for a week or so before i flip to 12/12

Rick for whats it's worth,veg time is up to you regarding when or how. Once flipped most plants will double in height from clones and triple in height from seed depending on the strain but is a good rule of thumb.

It all boils down to what YOU want,bushes shrubs or tree's. Hope it all goes well for ya and never forget it's a weed man it knows what to do and has been without any help from man or women for a million or so years. All we do as growers is make them better and faster but the blueprint they already have in the genes.

I agree with Mr Wags, and I have grown them many different ways. From 2 weeks to 2 months in veg. If you can give them a week or so under the hps before you flip them that may be a good thing and may give you some quick growth too.

I just let them grow until they reach the height I want them at before I flip into flower, normally about 18 inches tall.

no but i will admit the 1st 10 days or so are a very fragile time for seedlings i count when they break the soil. as for preflowers mine all show them when i start 12/12 i never 12/12 just to find out the plants sex then revert back to veg. they show sex 3-6 wks after sprout from 4th node on up some plants show 7-9th node.

oops what type of lighting are you using to make a seedling only 3 inchs tall after 4wks of life

and whats the grow erea temps colder temps stunt growth

They're actually about 5 to 6 inches now that I measure them. Really tight internodes. All have been topped except for 3 of the hashberrys, and the two Giant Cindys. They're all sitting under 24w x 4 2ft T5 tube fixture. They're in DWC so there is lots of side branching , and the topped plants are grwoing into bushes.

when the feeder leafs fall off dry up its veging....no longer living off of those cottldons or what ever the hell the name of those things are
