I have two questions

1. why do people make thermo-fan speed controller when you can buy this (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...03+90401+500524&marketID=401&locStoreNum=8125) for hardly and cash. is there a safetly reason or anything.

2. if you took (http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs...d=10053&productId=100056056&categoryID=501161) could you just attack a male plug to it and into the wall or a timer. Would this pose safety problems or people just seperate everything for convience and placement?

I would guess since it is rated at 5 amps. Depends on what you are hooking up to it. It would probably work in most cases of turning on a fan.

I think there is a DIY thread out there about turning a security light into a remote ballast unit so do a search and I am sure it will pop up.

I would suggest that a lot of folks on this site that are building/using "fan speed controllers" are putting their fans at risk if they are not using a solid state controller to modulate fan speed. Rheostats and transformers do reduce the life of the motor windings. This is without a doubt and area of extreme expertise for me and I have been chewing on my tounge trying not to spoil everybody's fun for long enough.

I am no electrician but I do not see why not. Just use a decent plug
