so Phason/speed controllers lessen wattage used?

I really like these Phason controllers for monitoring the speed of the fans in relation to the temperature of the room.

I was wondering though, if the temperature in the room gets colder and the phason controller slows down the speed of the fans for air cooled lighting, does that mean that the fan is also drawing less watts?

Same questions for those cheap speed controllers. If you turn it down making the fan run less cfm's will that fan also draw less watts.

thanks

its a reasonable question, especially considering these new dimable digital ballasts apparently use full wattage even when dimmed.

Do you have a good site for buying these Phason controllers from?

Sorry I am buying it locally. A member named Dongles is using one in her setup and I believe a member posted a link to the best place to buy it online in her 6000w grow thread.

If I do come across any mention about best place to buy them I will post the site in this thread.

I would PM you but for some reason this site doesn't let me pm anyone lol.

That's the link to the site that 2 members in dongles thread purchased phason controllers from. They said that they are pretty good supplier. One guy phoned farmtek inquiring if the phasom would make his fans hum when installed, and the customer service guy at farmtek said if the fans hum after install just send it back for a full refund. Sounds like a good company to buy from IMO. Some fans will hum when you add a controller and sum don't. I think it has to do with the brand of fan.

cool, thx for the follow-up info. Controllers are one of the last pieces of equipment I need to pick for my upcoming cab build project.

The Lumateks are the ones that say that they use full power when dimmed. Quantum says that theirs use less power when dimmed.

Very true. This is also the case with many fan speed controllers because they operate on variable resistance knobs and sliders. So in order to slow down the fan, they end up dissipating a portion of the energy as heat before letting the power reach the fan.

Instead of variable resistance, the Phason controllers work with pulse modulation. They turn the power supply on and off really fast giving the fan the power it needs without wasting the leftover through a resistor.
