smoking badly cured buds...

Earlier this week I picked a little bud off a plant about half-done. I really did a bad job of curing her; she wasn't really dry yet... But I was in such a hurry that I smoked her anyway. It was really really harsh... I didn't even finish a joint. Now I have a splitting headache. Is there anything toxic left in a badly cured herb? I'm just curious.

It's groing in soil ammended by organic fertilizers (basicly cattle poo). No chemicals were added to the soil...

Picking it that early is what probly gave you the headache. A water bong will help with the harshness. Peace and *bong* :friends:

I think the problem is the drying/cure - or lack of it
damp bud gives me a headache too - dry it for another week and it will be less harsh and contain less moisture and living plant matter to upset your sinuses (which is probably what the headache is)

.....All that chlorophyll......thats probably whats giving you a head-ache....

chlorophyll:pronunciation[klawr-uh-fil, klohr-]

–noun Botany, Biochemistry the green coloring matter of leaves and plants, essential to the production of carbohydrates by photosynthesis, and occurring in a bluish-black form, and a dark-green

Gypsy's right...it's totally the chlorophyll. Blech! The darker the green, the harsher (usually). Also, indicas tend to be harsher than sativas. A cure makes the chlorophyll break down to lesser (less harsh) components.

Don't take anymore early buds..let your plants grow out and take the buds when they're ready. trim em well, dry and cure. you'll see a world of difference. make sure you stop feeding N towards the end of flowering to let the plants lighten up a little...

..but if you have to pinch a bud early..don't ..but if you are really hanging out keep in mind that this bud will get you twice as high when fully matured and cured..and will go twice as far!..early picking and fast drying is a big waste ...try to score something to keep you going, or develop patience!....picking early and quick drying is stupid and wasteful

but if you are truelly jonesing ...try this...remove the non-resiny leaves, soak the bud in water for 12~ 24 hours, flick the water of it and hang dry..I'm not a fan of water curing, but if bud that is to be cut, dried fast and smoked all in the same day or two without a cure really will benefit from a soak in water which will help leach out the green..the longer the soak , the smoother it will be

if you are in a hurry then cut the bud into 1/5 of gram size pieces and place on a tissue on a warm surface like an amp or modem..cover with a curve of cardboard to keep the heat in...12 ~ 24 hours and it will be smokeable

if you are in ascreaming hurry, cover the bud in a damp tissue or two and zap it in a microwave on medium for 20 ~ 30 seconds at a time ..wait a minute after each zapping, and repeat until dry.... the bud may appear to be slightly damp after a few zaps in the microwave, but will dry in the open air ..so that's why it's important to wait between zaps....

I don't own a microwave....was hanging out for a puff years ago and wanted to try the microwave quick dry method that ~Shabang~ wrote about on OG years ago so I went downstairs to the local 7-11 and placed a just cut, half gram size bud in damp tissues in their 7-11...lol..it does emit somewhat of a green smell....and I think I must of zapped it too many times as the whole 7-11 had a toasted bud and over cooked burnt popcorn smell ..lol....the 7-11 kid came over and asked do I need a hand with heating the popcorn and I said "no thanks mate I'm fine..I like my popcorn well done"..lol..I had put the pop corn in there with the bud as cammo but the bud took 5 or 6 goes to cook it..silly me, I should of just zapped the bud by itself ..and the loud MW buzzer kept going louding "DINGGGGGGGGGG" every 30 seconds as the timer went off ...then as I was finishing zapping the bud another guy was waiting to use the micro to zap his popcorn lol.." I think it's not working right mate".....lol....madness..I got the phuck outta there quick smart.

strange as it may seem, bud that has been soaked in water dries faster than bud that is cut and then dried...

I've found that even a few hours in water, then dried so it is smokeable in 3 days is a vast improvement on smokeablility over bud that is quick dried in one or two days without soaking....3 days seems to be the absolute minimum..anything less is a criminal waste of resin

another way to fast dry is to leave the bud on a roof tile on a hot day or two...sun dried bud seems to be better ( smokes better and less THC is lost) than using artificial heat sources like a hot amp

never use an oven....but you can heat an oven then turn it off then place a tray of cut up bud..when it's cool in the oven...remove the tray, re-heat the oven, turn off the heat and place the tray back in there...never use direct heat as you will kill much more THC.

another way is to place the bud ontop of a toaster oven...but heat the toaster oven up, turn it off then place the bud on a cigarette paper on top of the oven ...repeat several times until dry enough to smoke...

fast drying is great way to unsatifactorily burn through your crop quickly.....

the best way is to plan ahead and allow at least 3 days normal hang drying with indirect ventilation in a dark dry place...then slowly use warm (not hot) temps for a 4 ~ 8 hours ( cut into smaller pieces on top of a modem) so it's dry to smoke..this is ten times better than fast heating or zapping

some great info... I have a question though. Say, you're nearing harvest and you want to sample some bud to determine the right time to chop 'em. Would the water cure work best for its speed? Which method would you recommend?
Thanx

And, no I'll never cut that early again. It was a learning experience though. I mean the calyxes weren't even swollen (As they're supposed to be I guess). It was a very small bud off the lower branch. I just figured. it's covered with crystals... so maybe it'll do something. And it do something. I did feel my muscles relaxing... I realized that this is indeed good medicine (had forgotten or perhaps she's just that special). It's just the splitting headache she gave me... or perhaps it's some other stress.

you don't quick dry bud to see when to harvest...quick dry is poor test of ready to harvest.....what you should do it wait until the calyxes are plump and covered in resin ..use a 20X ~ 30X and have a look over several buds ...for the average hybrid out there you can harvest when a majority of the resin heads change from clear then harvest the plants or branches in stages .....eg 8 weeks, 9 weeks and 10 weeks..keep them tagged and separated..smoke test and then when you grow this strain again you'll know when to harvest that strain to your satisfaction...give or take a week!

consider fast dry test sampling the same as premature ejaculation...both are unsatisfactory for all concerned

I was just wondering about the oven too. I live in a cool foggy place so the bud takes forever (it's been 2 weeks already) to dry. I probably shoulda trimmed a little closer, but still.......plus they hermed..

but it's still a nice floaty relaxing hihg
