smell control

Hi, I have some new additions in my libary and they stink so I splashed out on a new pro rhino filter and spent a small fortune on a vapourtek4000 has anyone used these tools in there smell security ,ice tried the vapourtek on setting 1 and 2 and its good so far but I have no specimins here yet so I can't tell if these exspensive smell proof gadgets work ,plus how long really does the pro rhino filter and vapourtek 4000 carltridge last ,they say 3 year for filter and 3 month for cartlidge so they say.peace growers.

sorry, I don't use either of those but is there a reason that you wouldn't use a carbon filter and exhaust fan? Not enough space?

I bought some airfreshners and soaked cotton sheets in it and made curtains for my growspaces, it's pretty low tech but it seems to function for my current cabinets lol

alls i am using is vaportek- first time. no carbon this time at all. 3rd week flowering- so far, so good. only got 23 daYS out of first cartridge. smell control is pricey. see what happens with my 2nd cartridge- probably get same amount of days. id say filter and vaportek should be excellent together.

Always, and I repeat, ALWAYS, use a larger carbon filter than you think you'll need. And then sometimes it's not enough. Especially with the heavily stinky strains. The Vapor Tech 4000 is a nice little unit but it won't compete with those same danky, stinky strains. I have 3 big filters and a Vapor Tech 4000. 1 in a seperate room for the air intake to the lights, 1 in the room, and another outside the room. There is a 10inch corona discharge(1 tube) on the discharge of the airflow of the lights. And the Vapor Tech is in the outer room. No smell now. And I do run some stank!
Best tip I can give you is to keep a large carbon filter running in the room you trim and hang it. Will eat up that smell as they dry.

It's not as pricey as a lawyer and a court case. You can get away with smell in small spaces but eventually, if you continue to grow and expand, you will need big ass expensive scrubbers. Better to get into the habit of using them early on so you don't get sloppy about it later. Start good habits early.

i agree with this man

I always oversize on the carbon cans. My last 4kw show I had a 5ft can and a 12inch vortex. The guy at the hydro store kinda chuckled when I got it and 4 ballasts, but I feel Id rather have a larger surface area to scrub my stinky air than over work a smaller filter and have a smell lingering.

my 2 cents:blowbubbles::tiphat:

I've had to knock down 3 different commercial rooms due to smell, this is with brand new water heater sized carbon cans even.

You can never have enough smell protection.

A Grow room smelling is like watching your girlfriend get fat.... You never notice until its too late.

You'll think you smell it, but what you're smelling is just 25% or less of the actual smell once you're used to it.

id have to agree with ya on that. most people do grow and expand. im actually been there done that. im on the opposite end now.im still using no scrubber. i kept changing scrubbers wondering why i could still smell it. yeah the scrubbers work but not 100 percent for me. also, you need that humidity low or else the thing becomes clogged rather fast with water vapor. everything in multiples is much better that one alone. carbon and the vaportek is a better combo. im semi sealed and contained with smaller #s so for me it works well.smoke and odor is what you want. works way better than the neutral(my opinion of course). i will say its not cheap. when they say 240-270 hrs- thats about accurate. also try to pick your strains- i have frutier strains as opposed to fuel-diesel smelling skunky strains. makes a big difference.

Could you still smell it outside of the room and anywhere else that would cause notice? Even with the biggest scrubbers you'll still smell the plants if you're in the room with them. Im sure you know that. It's outside of the room (and more importantly, outside of the house/apt/commercial) that scrubbers pay themselves off. I don't care how much they stink in the room. It's whether the smell creeps to the front door or through the walls to the outside that matters unless you're trying to hide it from people inside. Im running an AK cross and they reek so I can't afford to cut corners.

I used the original Vaportronics in a smaller space early on and found them to be a waste of money compared to properly sized carbon. For the cost of the replacement disks alone over the course of a year one can buy a small 4" scrubber and cheap centrifugal fan (total $120ish) and get good results that actually clean the air instead of masking it like the Vaportek products generally do.

i got tired of going to hydro shops to buy big heavy carbon filters. u have a point with cleaning the air as opposed to masking it. at least its natural oil so u arent breathing chemicals. no smell outside of my room at all. im not sure how the vaportronics works but an optimum cartridge works well for about 7 days and its done. for a bigger operation, im sure youll need a shark with a bunch of membranes, The filter is def more cost effective. no doubt about it. also, if anyone is reading this, vaportek beats ona hands down. the ona smells strong for the first few days where as the vaportek is strong till its run out. the ona concentrate is 1 part oil 10 pats water. once the oil evaporates you left with water.

Organic Air carbon filters are re-useable [wash with water] and look like K&N air filters for cars. The 6" size is rated at about 1000 cfm and the 12" is rated at 4000 cfm.

At the suggestion of another member, I run the 6" size with a fan inside the room 24/7. My room exhaust has the 12" size. My room is approx 1370 cubic ft.

These filters are available at plantlightinghydroponics.com.

Run as many extra fan/filters as necessary.

Have a nice day. bg

Phresh filters are the way to go, much much lighter than a can fan of equivalent capability. Best part being you can install the big ones yourself! There should always be a carbon filter scrubbing grow room air 24/7. Resinryder is spot on, always buy the largest filters you can fit, there is no such thing as overkill with smell control.

Please don't use chemical options...

I've taken a hit off of dryer-sheet and laundry detergent bud many times before, and that was just stuff grown in the air hanging around the houses. Gack! Actually pretty common as a lot of home growers around here don't have 'real' ventilation. Disgusting... but remember that they can't smell/taste that because their house is just 'like that' all the time.

Also toxic to lung tissue are pine-sol fumes. Do NOT use Pine-Sol or other cleaners/chems as odor control. Fumes travel along the floors and are dangerous to pets and kids first.

Do NOT use Ozone in plant or people areas. Ozone is bad for tissue and will also break down other materials it comes in contact with. Make sure if you use it... it's in the exhaust ducting and being safely exhausted.

:thank you:

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

Carbon Cans man, I smoke/vape next to one and use them in my grows. Keep the room below 70% RH to make sure it works properly

Ive got a total of 4 can 100's in the actual grow space and one in my living space. Three can 100's in my flower room, one that recirculates constantly and two on the exhausts. Got another one recirculating where we dry and trim. I rely on my air getting scrubbed multiple times before it ends up leaving the area. What Im trying to say is when it comes to the smell the more the merrier.
