smart pots a security issue?

Yes. It is traceable. Now that that question is anwered you can get on to figuring out how likely the chances of that happening are.
The way I've looked at such situations, there's only 2 ways that this will be of consequence to you.
1. The online-store you bought it from is investigated by LE and they obtain all sales and shipping records. Law enforcement now knows that you purchased smart pots. If you purchased it from some place called something like "Stoners-Hydro-Weed-Shop.com" then they probably suspect the obvious. Local law enforcement may be informed and your info will appear on a post-it note on somebodies computer monitor. Unfortunately for them, grow equipment is not illegal and they really don't have enough evidence to warrant an investigation or any further action.
2. Law enforcement suspects you grow and looks into your credit card purchases, where they find an order for smart pots. If law enforcement is pulling your credit card record then you are already under investigation and you have bigger problems. Still the smart pot purchases are not significant evidence on their own.
Both seem kind of inconsequential to me. Although I would prefer to pay by money order or pre-paid/disposable debit card, just to keep my own credit card record clean.

last time I knew, smartpots weren't illegal, just because you own a smart pot does not mean you use it to grow marijuana. how do you think hydro shops would stay in business if all this stuff was illegal, even sears sells grow cabinets nowadays, the times are changing fast.

Your fine buddy, take the tin foil hat off. If your worried you can buy Pre pay credit cards w cash, then sign up for a few random catalogs w that name to establish it at your adress, register the card w it and have all the items sent to that guy....helps eliminate any possible PC or warrants in yer name. Also elminates your name from records at the shop ( who knows they could be sloppy) you dont have to go to hydro store....you do have rights in this country.
Smart pots are definitely not a risk man, I bought tons of them to grow veggies in and they are very popular with gardeners in general. Don't sweat it man!
The only stuff you should be really careful ordering is hydro gear, carbon filters, 1000 watt bulbs, etc.

Shit! Nothing wrong with buying pots. For years I've ordered grow equip including nutes, bulbs, reflectors, ballasts, pots of all sorts, for me and some of my friends from almost every popular hydroponic supply site online and ebay, and nothing came of it. The UPS man sees me every other day.
I don't live in a medical state. If police can get a warrant to search your house for buying pots, even if they are the ones running the site and shipping the pots themselves, then we all have BIGGER problems to worry about.

i think you might be outparanoiding yourself a bit, but...i also think it worth mentioning that direct 'police get a warrant' type action isn't the only way purchases can cause one potential problems. look into data mining - there are companies that exist for no reason other than consolidating your (and mine) purchase histories - and selling it to whoever will pay to see it. there's an assumption of buying privacy that really doesn't exist.

Great season to put a few tomato plants in smart pots in your front yard, right where they can be seen. If LEO does the "knock and talk", point to the tomatoes, be nice, offer them nice heirloom beefsteak or a roma, and tell them you appreciate their vigilance. Ya know?

Smart Pots are actually only pots, the smart part should be the people using them.

It actually makes sense, Digi. There aren't a lot of places that carry them in my area...
I guess the upside to that is the police would be less likely to recognize them for what they are but if one of them does... I can't imagine there's a lot of orders for 100 gallon smart pots in my area for residential use.
