Small room , what can I do with it?

This is the space I want to use as a grow room:

The dimensions are: 28'' wide X 18'' deep X 4' tall. I'm gonna remove board and use it to access the space.

How many plants could fit in there and what medium / method would you use?

I'm running my new cab with a 150w HPS and it is 23x23x41 It seems like the right lite to me. I'm running vertical bare bulb. Your space may be better horizontal. I'm running a 170cfm exhaust/filter with a speed controller dialed down to mid setting and I'm getting temps 3 to 5 above ambient. I've got 4 in flower that I'm vegging for a while not sure what to suggest on numbers because micro/grow/cabbing is new to me.

I'm all about LED, especially for those tight spots. my first grow was about that size, three plants, very poorly vegged with CPF, but finally got the LED and they started loving it. Three ounces. You will need some top ventilation as they run hot on the top. I have the 240w Blackstar LED off ebay for $280--it would do well in that size area, but if you spent $550 for the 500w model you'd be better off. LED's actual power draw are a little over half of what they say, the 240w model only draw's ~135w. if you electricity bill is a concern.

I'd do two trained plants in that space, maybe scrog if height is an issue.

vert t5ho's on 3 walls, train to a trellis attached to pots, pull em out for maintenance.
big investment but they run cool and produce well.

Not all LED's play fast & loose with the power figures - check this specification very carefully if you want to go that route. Check the following link to GP73LPC's thread comparing various manufacturer's.

LED's would work very well in that space, as would T5's or PL-L's. Scrog or LST, and probably 2 plants.

If you can spare any more space you could do mother/flower rooms. Otherwise you should probably divide the space front to back or back to front to allow for clone/mother along with flower. Number of plants is irrelevant if you can veg appropriately from the start. Actually, 2 4' t5 hung vert in a flowering space there could do wonders. Just have to leaf prune to keep the light on the buds. Actually, more I think of it, divided left/right with mother/flower rooms using t5's around would be cheap and you could continually flower one plant with one mother and one clone in the other space. Would just have to trim the clone to be short from the start. Fun challenge.

LED would be good if you can find one or two with a footprint that fits the space. 150 hps is a little bit small for that whole space. a 250 hps horizontal would give you plenty of light . you would probably need to lst or scrog to keep the height down. if you had the right 250 ballast then you could use Metal halide lamp in early flower to reduce stretch and then swap to an hps.

plant numbers are academic really - it depends how long you veg them . if you want to keep the numbers down then try a 2 plant scrog.

grow method up to you, if in doubt i would try organic soil as it gives good quality weed and is pretty easy provided you use a good soil mix.

Yea, I am growing illegally, and am going to get fucked no matter what, so I will of course suggest doing a SOG if you can swing it. But definitely listen the Verdant, he is definitely one of the best at maximizing the most out of a small space.

Thanks for all the info guys,
It's going to be very helpful when choosing lighting.

Right now , I still can't figure out how to divide this space. That's all I got so cloning chamber has to be somehow incorporated into this room. That's the biggest challenge for me.

If I put a shelf diving it into -
Top - 18" (vegging)
Bottom - 30" (flowering)

You think I will be able to handle the stretch?

BTW , AOD2012 , that's exactly what I was just thinking. SOG looks like the best way for this space.

I would most definitely put your cloning chamber at the top of the space. That way the ambient heat from the room will be warming the clones from the bottom up, so you wont need a heat mat or anything. Good luck dude.

From your photos I see a full length door and stuff piled on the floor. How is it that you are limited to only four feet vertical?

i say make a scrog screen use a single 600 watter let it hang vert no hood and one or two pants on styrofoam one the floor and use subcools soil les mix gh3part nutes mylar on the walls or a good flat white paint and kick it of with some ak 48 there cheap and very good if you want an indica use there auroa indica good luck

^^ 600 in that space! jog on guys - its actually on the small side even for a 250.
and to suggest 4lb in a year is ridiculous - there just isnt room for that many buds in there - you would need 1lb per harvest and i would say that 1/2 lb is the maximum you would get out of that space. im no expert on vert but im pretty sure that 18" width is NOT enough for a vert setup.

savta - dividing the cabinet into two spaces will severely limit your choice of light and make the grows much harder. it is possible to grow in 30" of height but it is very tight.

i still think scrog is your best bet in there as it gives you more control over height than sog - but im a scrogger so perhaps im biased - also plant count means a lot where i live if you get busted.

my advice would be to try and work out if you can get a tiny cloning/mum area elsewhere - you only really need something tiny. just for cloning i have a box that is 7x11x13" high that fits a half size seed tray inside and can root 8 or so clones under a 9w cfl
picture.php

if you absolutely have to clone veg in there in separate area i would try and work out making a small box (or two) that sits at the top of the cab but on either side, leaving the full height in the middle so you have room to hang the light there and you keep the full height of the room. i think you would get bigger and easier harvests by starting with small plants a week or so old and then vegging for a week or so in the flower space - rather than splitting the height in two and vegging separately.

its really worth thinking this through properly before you start - save you a lot of hassle down the line.

Like most posts I've read by him, VG is right. Check out "The Cab Club" amongst other threads to design a simple mom/clone chamber. Use what you've got for flowering.
