Small Fan Faceoff

Hey all,

I currently have a Can2600 filter in my HomeBox XS (2x2x4') being pulled through by a 4" axial fan.
I'm looking to improve my airflow by upgrading my fan.
So I'm wondering if I should get a Can/Vortex 4" centrifugal fan or a 4" dayton blower?
The Dayton has a higher CFM/lower price but I'm thinking a Can/Vortex will do better
with the static pressure of the carbon filter and the super-short duct run.

The filter is rated for 94CFM, the 4" centrifugal I'm looking at does about 144CFM while the Dayton does closer to 200CFM.

Thanks!

If you want your cab to sound like Cape Canaveral at liftoff with the speakers set to 11, the Dayton or Vortex will do you fine. If you've any interest in stealth, check out S&P or Whisperfans. Great Inline Fans (S&P)

What size is your lamp? I'm running a 250CMH in a 22x29x54 inch cab with an S&P 100X (100-135 CFM). Set on low, it still needs muffling.

I have a blower. 29db at full speed and significantly quieter with a speed controller on lowest setting. The centrifugal fan will probably work better with a scrubber but they're about 40db.

Hey Maxor,

check out my ventilation 101. I just did a write up on Filters/Fan Combo's using CAN FAN data.

That 2600 with a 4" is only passing around 40CFM. My advice is to split your ventilation in two parts. Use an unblocked fan to cool your lights with a cooltube and keep the fan/scrubber combo for plant ventilation.

What size lights are ya runnin' ???

Thanks for jumping in so fast, I currently have about 250watts of fluoros but I'm thinking
about adding a 250watt HPS/CMH to replace most of that on my next run and I know the 4" axial
won't cut it because I'm already at about +10F above ambient.

I went to my local shop and they happened to have an open-box 4" vortex and DAAAAMN that thing is loud -- moves a ton of air though.

I think I'm ultimately going to have to run two systems as Red suggests for the optimal balance of acoustics/ventilation.

A 250 HPS is actually quite a bit cooler than the equivalent in CFL's if it's remote ballasted. There's a lot of heat given off by the ballasts.

My idea would be to keep your existing fan and just add a second inline axial as a booster. It won't double the airflow but will double the pressure so there will be a flow increase and alot quieter than the Vortex.
