Small E&F - plants per square foot?

I'm going to be setting up a small E&F for my cab. Because of the size of the res and tray I go from having about 4' of usable vertical space to maybe 2'. The tray measures about 25"x15". I have a 400w light. How many plants can I fit on there?

I think I'm going to go for a smaller res. Maybe a 10 gallon or so. This is not a lot of vertical room at all.

If I can get back to 3' of usable vertical space, how many plants then on the same tray?

I'm trying to maximize yield with this small amount of vertical room.

Thanks!

My space is 22x29x54. I used to happily do a 24 plant E&F sog but, now I know they were sad and puny. (Darn you IC! Darn you all to Heck!!) One day the shop had no 4" cubes so I went with 6" and was amazed at the increased yield per plant (well, duh! bigger roots=bigger plants) Then I came here and discovered DWC and Root Porn and I'm never going back. 20 week grow, not one speck of algae and only one single gnat (though it is winter, mild as they are here)

I too would like more vert space and I'm considering how best to make/aquire a custom res so I can maintain res volume in a considerably shorter space. That said, I kept a T*Haze x Skunk#1 (7-8 feet in the wild) under 22 inches with ScROG.

I say the first shot at a new method is the waffle run. You get to throw the first one out. Try it, see what happens. I would say don't pack them in like I did, give roots space to grow or you'll get puny buds like I did. (Although Dr Budgreengenes does amazingly well in soda bottles. Check his stuff out) Also, use the largest res you can get away with. More volume means less maintenance and milder swings of pH and EC.

Thanks for the advice. I've got a couple of Super Skunk that I've kept under 12" with LST and they are really bushy. I think I'll try the same thing again but with 4 plants on the E&F.

Completely strain and grower dependent. How long do you plan on vegging, what style grow, what type of medium, etc. Previous experience w/ the strain will help answer this question.
