Hi guys eres a pic of my northern lights, "few there in gallery"
Thing is Im just wonderin when to place under the BIG LIGHT, time 20 hours on and 4 hours off ? Is this correct ?
if you want to know if you can put those seedlings under a big light, sure. why not but they seem to be doing ok where they are. it's going to take awhile before they reach any kind of height and need a more powerful light. what kind of light are they under now?
The best fixture for a seedling that size is a basic 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight, preferably with a reflector but not necessary.Keep the lamps literally 1/2 above the seedlings at all times, this means you must adjust the light every day or every other day.My shoplight is never ever totally horizontal, its always at a slope because the seedlings are never the same size and I dont want them more than 1/2 inch away from the lamps,so I must arrange them tallest to shortest,I cant tell you how important it is to keep those lamps close,2 inches is too far away and the plants will suffer. You can grow a seedling to 4 or 5 inches under a shoplight but then its effectiveness wanes and its best to change to HIDs.The first day under HID's make sure they are either off to the side or a good 2-3 ft under the lamps because the switch can be deadly if they are too close to the HID's initially.
Cheers for the info guys, I have them under 2 40watt flo`s, yes there doin well, Might leave em there for another few wks then til I geta few more leaves on maybe ? Then stick em under the HID`s 20 hr`s on 4 hr`s off ? Is this also correct ? ONce again cheers in advance for all replys deef.
They will definatley be fine for another week or 2 under the light you have in the pic. As Skeletor said, it is imperative to have those lights right on top of those seedlings or they will tend to stretch and be lanky growing towards the light. The light in the pic is too far away. when transplanting those babies into a bigger container down the road bury the stem a bit when filling in with soil. This will take away from any of the stretch you might incur and give them a nice stable start in the new digs. Good luck to you
on a side note, 24/0 is the way I would go. the 4 hours off has no beneficial gains and applies uneccessary stress on the ballasts having to fire up more frequently.

regarding no benefits, i don't believe that's so, i don't know about the ballast. i would think it's a trade off. dark time means less wear on the ballast but firing it up does take quite a charge. i'd think it's a tie. now that i'm curious, i'll go through some manufacturer's literature to see what they have to say.
during their dark period root growth kicks in per nature's plan. it isn't necessary if you are growing in a small veg area and can't transplant to larger pots yet. you can find a thousand threads on the veg light cycle. i did 24/7 for 10 years or so, now i do 4 to 6 hours of dark.
flip a coin. either way, you're good. just don't have them on 24/7 for a few weeks then go to 20/4 or 18/6. they might flower on you. some of mine did. not a good thing.
skel, what kind of bulbs are you using? I have a cool bulb and a warm bathroom bulb in each 4 foot fixture. I use these for my cuttings/clones until my veg area frees up. Its currently being used for flowering.
I use 1 daylight 6500K and 1 warm white 3000K,I just like to mix it up it probably doesnt make a lick of difference actually what's important is keeping those lamps close
