sister wants to visit at worst possible time of year

So, I live in the Bay Area. My sister, who lives halfway across the country, is going to be in town next week for a work conference. We haven't seen each other in about 15 months, and she wants to take a one- or two-day detour my way.

The problem with this is, it is the peak of the outdoor season and my back yard is literally stuffed with plants. There's no hiding 'em, it's a jungle back there. My sister doesn't know about this part of my life and I don't want her to know about this part of my life, so a visit to my home isn't really an option. Unfortunately, I've already put her off once this year and am concerned about doing so again without seeing her.

I'm thinking of telling her I'm having the place fumigated during the two-day window of her visit, so she/we won't be able to hang here. Staying with a buddy, but happy to meet wherever she's staying. Sound plausible?

Anyone else ever find themselves in a similar situation--needing to keep a relative away from your home? It's a bummer but unfortunately, it's necessary.

WoW...if you're legal then what's the deal? This is who I am...this is my life. Obviously you have something to hide. Are you so dependant on your family for some reason?

That seems like a decent lie...if you want to live like that.

Plan a trip to somewhere away from your house. Maybe a day on the coast up north and then a day in Napa/Sonoma. There's a bunch of beautiful places along the coast. If not, maybe down towards Santa Cruz or to Lake Tahoe.

Some people just like to keep certain things private. It's not always necessary to put things in people faces. Mostly out of respect. I don't bring my mom around all my nonsense. It's not necessary.

Respect? Don't wear what you do on your sleeve. No need to show somebody something unless they really need to know. So your life is a bunch of nonsense? I'm just done living with lies yet my business is my business.

Maybe I should try and go sell T-shirts or something.

Thanks Abja, I appreciate the great suggestion. She's probably enjoy a day trip to Santa Cruz.

Guys, I'm not obliged to open every aspect of my life to someone who wants to visit with very little notice. Regardless of legal/medical status, it would not be good for my sister to know about my interest in these plants. My garden is not going to be part of the equation here. Therefore, any time spent together must happen away from home. If I can't get the courtesy of more than a few days notice for a planned visit, a workaround is necessary, and I think a day trip is just the ticket.

Keep on living the lie. Life is short. I'm glad you got it figured out.

NPK, I agree it is disrespectful to not give your prior notice/heads up that she will be in town for a business conference that obviously was not last minute.

I would respectfully decline her request citing prior engagements. She should perhaps fly out to see you another time solely for the sake of bonding with her sibling and not try to dictate your agenda.

My 2 cents. Good luck bro.

If your day trip ends short, just put some blinds up and cover windows facing the back  i'd imagine you don't have huge stinky nugs out back yet so smell shouldn't be a huge issue, but i don't really know your property.

You should make the detour to see her. Make a hotel reservation and buy tickets to an event in the city that you/she would like to attend. Then it's set in stone. Meet up with her and show her the sights. Santa Cruz is a great idea.

You know your family. We don't. Hold your cards close if that's what you think is best. I sure would.

She's going to think it's weird that she can't come to your house...which will snowball in to other lies.

Tell her that you have prior engagements and can't hang. Shit happens.
