I know the rep system isn't perfect, and this thread is not to bitch about it, but I had an idea which might help make it better, if it could be implemented...

Can the "do you find this post helpful" button be configured so that the poster gets +rep for providing helpful answers, but is not penalized with -rep when the answers are not helpful?

that way, the helpfulness of posts would be easily viewable, and people would get credit for being helpful, and people could be completely honest about how helpful a post is, without worrying about pissing people off or harming their rep or starting a chain reaction of 'rep bombs'.

The old system is in place, for people who want to leave a positive or negative rep, with a message... and it has proper boundaries in place already which prevent too much abuse.

anyhow... something to think about if it is possible to code thusly.

OK, So I'm still a new guy but I find this little ditty;
Did you find this post helpful? Yes | No
redundant.
The forum has a rep system and this is just a lazy mans way to give a cudo, without comment or thought. A negative rep requires a comment but clicking a "No" on this does what, exactly? (never tried myself). There are MANY posts on this forum that are not exactly 'helpful' but really don't require that we notify the poster of that fact, do they.

As an aside, I noticed something weird. Before I reached the magic 50 posts I never saw this little choice at the bottom of each post; unless I was logged out (viewing as guest). The choice was there for me to click when not logged in then would disappear when I did log in. Not sure what would have happened if I clicked on one when not logged in but it was there.

It really makes no difference to me in the greater scheme of things while viewing the forum but if there was a vote I'd vote it out. I will admit to using this rather than taking the time to actually click on scales and leave a message.

if it is used as a gauge of the helpfulness level of a given post, then it is not redundant.
if it is nothing more than a 'lazy rep' button, then i agree there is much redundancy.

Seems like a good suggestion if its implementable I often dont use the helpful thing on anything except yes... The one time I used it to say no the guy went and did that to 3 posts and gave me a real negative rep with some friendly words.

i like that idea, it's true as things are one hesitates to say post was not helpful as it still might not deserve actual neg rep. so yes that would also solve those idiots who give people a bunch of neg rep using the is this post useful function.

Great idea Grat3fulh3ad i have spent all day yesterday sorting out a dispute for this EXACT reason, One member asked me if i get negative rep or my post is not helpful then i would like to know why my post is not helpful, it doesn't help when you get something saying Helpful answer negative rating with no comment, how are we supposed to improve or learn from our mistakes if we don't get told why it was not helpful in the first place...

I agree.

People get very touchy about losing rep, and with no explanatory comment (as with a negative rep message), it just leads to bad feelings, and everything that comes with it. All of which detracts from which ever discussion about cannabis that was actually happening.

I think the "unhelpful comment" icon should be de-linked from the reputation system.

Ok, I've removed the neg rep for helpful answers. However you were only getting 1/4 of the rep power so it hardly affects one's rep anyway.

And ppl can still leave you an unhelpful notice, and you still won't know why. But now you won't get -1/4 pt or whatever it was you were getting. Big deal folks!
