i noticed this problem starting about 3 weeks ago. first leaves on tops were 'tacoing'. so i raised my light. then tips of leaves showed a little burn at 900 ppm/ 1.8. next week nutes went down to 500 ppm/ 1.0, still tip burn. following h&g's schedule with 1.25 tsp. cal-mag/ gallon. im now in last week of shooting powder, but problem showed before using shooting powder. probally too late for this grow, but would like to figure it out for the next grows... i believe its a calcium/ magnesium problem. my thermometer records highs and lows, never reached over 80*f at the canopy.... i believe this problem has led to small bud production, they are nice but small. i'm noticing a little tip burn on the sugar leaves now too. thats all i can think of, lets figure his out... thanks in advance...

" following h&g normal 10 week"

I'll say nute-burn (my mantra for the day it seems)

finishing flowering you say?

stop with the nutes.

flush flush flush.

good luck!

I gave up on SD. I was given a clone but it could have just been a weak plant to start but it was nothing but temperamental and weak with thin branches.
I've go so many vigorous varieties that I had to give up on SD.

Good Luck

Well, you don't even need that much. H&G has quite a bit of Cal And Mag
in it already. I cut my cal/mg use to .50 tsp per gal. It helped get the N down.

kcar- thanks for your time with this... so maybe i got an OD of cal-mag? trichomes are all cloudy, no ambers yet that i see. so i'll probally just start flushing today at lights-on... in the future, i'll just stick with .5 tsp/gal or less... thanks again kcar

hey sarge- this SD is a little tempermental, but branching and overall structure is nice. thick, strong branching and good growth rate. it would have been good if i didn't mess it up... plus i love the flavor of SD. this is the only way i could grow it though, i can't seem to get some of res' SD... at least i got a mom cutting of this one to try again some other time.thanks:headbange

It sounds like Mg but that would depend on your bottom to middle fan leaves... How do they look? Yellowing between viens with tip burn?

actually the lower and middle fans are still good. just very slight tip burn, very slight. the problem first showed on the top leaves. started out with slight tip burn, then the 'tacoing', which i thought maybe it was heat sensitive, so i raised the light. then the yellowing, which started at the center of the leafs, inside the tacoed leaves. im no expert, but im no newb either, just can't figure this out. i feel as if my enviornment is pretty ideal, its got to be some kind of cal/mag problem. i check ph everyday at lights on, stays pretty solid. once or twice ph had drifted pretty high or pretty low, but was addressed right then. so it never stayed outside of 5.8-6.2 for more than a few hours. thanks for your time Massproducer...

No problem, it def could be calcium, but imho, if we are talking strictly top of the plant with the symptoms your describing you may also want to look into iron, which presents almost exactly the same as Mg (magnesium) but starts at the top and works its way down, it usually starts on the inside of the leaf, as opposed to zinc which starts closer to the edges and works in, while calcium will usually cause spotting almost like little yellow dots with the tip burn and weak branches.
Imho, iron fits best with the info, especially if you have been feeding cal/mag and combined with the initial heat problem, and if there was even a slight ph increase for even a short period. You may want to check it out

Ok so I did the same thing a long time back. In my opinion, its od on the cal mag. a and b already have cal and mag so the cal mag should only be used if you think your lacking. And if you were to be lacking you would only need a little. So I would just flush out and keep that in mind.

massproducer- i will check into iron def. sounds pretty much like my problem. not sure how iron could be deficient with quality nutes like H&G. might be from ph swings. thanks again for your time with this...

msd828- im thinking it could be both an OD and iron deficiency. might be a sensitive plant. thanks for your advice and i will keep the cal-mag thing in mind. thanks for your time...

any other theories??? i think you guys are on top of it though...

Some of the main things to cause cupping of young leaves is deficiencies of copper and manganese. Some other things do it too. Deficiencies of those are caused by pH too high assuming your nute levels are good and I'm sure they are. Could be caused by something else or a combination of things, so all you can do is try to keep that ph good. I'm no hydro guy, but seems like most let it range a little lower from 5.6-6.2 mostly 5.6-6.0

hey hazy- sounds right to me... i guess i have to monitor ph a little better. i'll try to keep it within 5.6-6.0. i guess i'll set low and let it come up a little over the week. thanks

does anyone know about ph when using H&G aqua flakes? it seems to me, when nutes are freshly mixed, the ph is slowly changing on their own. should i try to mix my nutes in the res, let it work itself out for an hour or two, then use up or down to adjust it to 5.6??? any advice would be greatly appreciated...

I've noticed that the nutes go up in pH as they are in the res longer. I start out at the bottom end of the pH limit and as it climbs out of the top limit, it's about time to change them anyway. The one thing I did notice is that you adjust you pH after you put in your supplements. The way I understand you're supposed to do it is mix A and B, let it stabilize and adjust the pH, THEN put in the sups and don't mess with it from there. I've been trying this myself and it's something I'm having a hard time remembering to do.. I just started this procedure a couple changes ago, so I'm not real sure if it's making a difference or not.

Well, first off u dont need to PH ur additives.
After u mix the A&B PH ur solution to 5.8, then add ur additives.
Also remeber ur base(AquaFlakes A&B) need to be 65 to 70% of ur PPM's. So if ur trying to have a PPM of 1000, A&B needs to have a PPM reading of 650 to 700.
hope this helps.

hey mgk- howz that black eye??? lol. i will also try it that way, we'll see if that helps... how long should i wait until i ph it??? im thinking enough time to let the mixture run through the chiller and back a couple times...thanks for the advice!

hey mj- good looking on the percentages thing. i never heard of that... i will be doing it that way from now on... thanks

I think MGK just beat me to it......

You are not mixing the nutes correctly.

Add A....stir.....add B.....stir very well.......correct your ph......now add weekly additives.

Bet that solves yer prob. ;)

I let mine stand about a min after mixing A & B before I pH it. Now I let teh pH bucket stand 10-15 minutes and then I mix it real good again and double check my pH.

Cuz I'm in soil, I hit it on 6.3 and then I add one additive at a time, stirring in between.

Once all additives are in, I let it stand 15 min....then mix again and then take all my readings. Now I am ready to water. ;) :)
