sick young plants

These were all started from seed in rockwool with the exception of the one K2 clone that struggled for a long time but finally showed roots. Three Sweet Warps and two White rhinos.

I just put them into the SWC setup (first try with this) and have tried to maintain a pH of 5.7-6.2, but it fluctuates (mostly rises) so often that its tough to say what percentage of the time it is actually set to this. Temps inside the cab had been brutally hot for a few days due to some hot weather coming around but are now at range of 77-87 degrees. Its tough to keep it any cooler in the room or cab itself. I treated the rockwool and have the reservoir at about 500ppm (consisting of pure blend pro grow and superthrive). I did remember to rinse the hydroton clay but after a few days the water was getting dirty so i changed it. For about a day the reservoir's PPM got to about 1000 which is too strong for plants at this stage... I dont know what the temp is in the res but i have a feeling its too warm given the temps in the cab being mid to upper 80s.

heres the set up:

Slowly shriveling sweet warp, i thought it was from heat stress but even when the temps cooled down a bit it continues to get worse:

Droopy sweet warp, I noticed there was algae growing on the surface of the rockwool so i trimmed it off. This has been droopy for 3-5 days i'd say:

K2 clone. This took forever to root and was 1 of 3 that made it. There is some browning on the edges of its lone fan leaf. I was excited to see a little new growth on this as its been moving along very slowly. I just want to preserve the genetics here:

A healthy looking sweet warp! The leaves were overly erect, pointing towards the sky. I believe this would have been from over fertilizing and i've noticed its settled down a bit since i changed the water:

White rhino seedling. This also has been drooping a bit and has a little brown/yellowing at the tops of its first leaves. New growth looks ok but its very small:

Healthy looking white rhino seedling:

I have the bottom of the net pots submerged a bit into the reservoir by about 1/4" to 1". I was unsure of what the water level should be relative to the net pots. There are no roots dangling from any of the net pots at this point so i thought it would be necessary in order to dampen the rockwool.

Any comments or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Hey : )

Starting new beans is fun isn't it? All that excitement of what could come from them..the high hopes :rasta: .....

I think to give your babes the best start there in those rocks you might want to consider hand feeding from the top until the roots are well established and reach the bottom of the pot. It shouldn't take long at all and this way you make sure your food and water is reaching where it needs to.

How big is your container and what amounts of PBP and Superthrive do you use? At this age I would use 1/4 - 1/3 strength nutrients only and use Superthrive sparingly (one drop per gallon is the MAX dose you want to give
..and maybe not every time either). I would also consider adding cal/mag to your regimen.

You need neeeed to get the water temperature down. When it slips up to the 80's that's really sizzling! Drop a ziploc with ice cubes or a bottle of frozen water in there to cool things off. Since it's a smaller container you may not need a big one.

Your setup is really neat but of course you know things will need constant monitoring. If you cannot be at home during the hottest part of the day to help things cool off then I would advise you to turn your lights off during that time and let them run in the cooler hours.

I hope you get them on the right track. they hold so much potential : )

Peace

I'd back off on the superthrive, it's alright for certain uses but it's easy to overdo it. It looks like some of the plants have nuteburn too, 1000ppm is way too high for them at this stage. Use 1/4 dose or so, like msjones said.

The temps they are at seem fine, just try and keep them under 90 when the lights on. 78-82 during lights on period would be key if you can get it that low, but a little over is fine. Good Luck

all my seedlings receive no nutrient for atleast 10 days from sprout.
then at 10 days i start at 1/4 after another 5 days 1/2 and leave them at
1/2 untill they are almost 3 weeks old.

ull soon find that over fert is most peoples problem,
they think the more i add the faster they will grow.
that isnt true in any way,

i prefer to always under fert my plants for me less is more

also.
the water level,
i once transplanted a brand new popped seed from soil to hydro system
and its root-tap was almost 5 inches long after only popping the surface
was only buried 1/4inch deep.

so ull soon find the roots will find that water in a matter of hours///

Ive killed off seedlings feeding nutes before 14 days old maybe that was the cause change the water with no nutes and flush from the top with the water also.

Temps TOO high

Temps TOO high

Hey there, you really need to get those temps down. You could find an aquarium chiller and use that(about 300$) or you could switch to an ebb and flow system that is less sensitive to high temps. Those high temps will not allow optimal growth and health, good luck!!!

He said inside the cab is 77-87 degrees, not the reservoir. 77-87 for cab temps isn't great, but it's not too bad.

$300+ is alot of money to spend on a problem that can be fixed fairly easily.
