If you only have a few seeds.
Take an eye dropper and place a drop of water on the shell every hour until it softens and falls off on it's own.
I have done this several times and it works a treat.
However had I any patience, I'd be a doctor, so I usually whip out my tweezers and looking glass.
I set up the glass, and insert the squeezed tweezer into the open end and slowly let it open.
That works well.
When I had choke seeds and could afford errors, I'd just dry my fingers and gently squeeze the hinge of the shell casing from the sides causing it to spread and slip off.
That works, just soso.
Sometime it leaves a membrane holding the cotyledons together.
In that case put a drop of water on it, wait a while, then carefully slip the wet membrane off if it does not pop off by itself in an hour.
The second two methods risk damaging tender, young, roothairs, so unless you have a steady hand the first method should be your first method.
Paul. Please remember the golden rule when working with seedlings. You need to learn how to live them alone and let them grow.
Everything you see is what build into their genetic code and they do know better when to drop or to keep their shell on. We truly don't know the reason why it does not come off right away, that is why if you leave it alone it will do its thing and be grateful that you did.
