She keeps making new stigmas???

I've got this tempermental pheno that has been all over the map on harvest time depending on ferts and temps. Last time she was done in 50 days, this time I'm at 65 and she keeps making new stigmas trichs are about 95/5 cloudy / amber and all of the leaves, even some of the bud leaf is yellow. Is there a point at which the plant will start feeding off the flowers? Looking at this pic, most of the stigmas / hairs look red (it also seems to put out a lot of hairs - what does that mean) but when I look at it with my eyes it looks about 50/50. Any thoughts?

haha, if you have 95% cloudy trichs you are way past harvest time. Stigmas have nothing to do with it being done for the most part. You have some sleepy body stoned weed on your hands now. I harvest before I get 50% cloudy trichs.

Chop it down already!

I agree fully on the part about stigmas, but on trich color for harvest? The most common time people seem to harvest is when most are cloudy and they're beginning to amber.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

clear = immature (racy)
cloudy = mature (head)
amber = ripe (body)

I'm not planning on having too much amber for my next harvest, so I'll probably try to chop them when it looks like amber is 2-3 days away. :dunno:

Don't worry about the color of the hairs, just go by trichs.

Thanks, I'm going to start taking her down asap. This is my first scrog and I'm really dreading chopping her up (I like to hang the plant whole.) Any ideas on why she has so many stigmas? Is it just genetics or could it be something environmental.

she is trying to propogate and she is dying an knows that, some will do this quite heavily and some strains won't. You can never go wrong getting a 30x loom to check out your trichs. That is the best way to tell when your crop is done...

can't argue with you mountain man, guess I didn't make it clear that I prefer a bouncy active high rather than a sleepy body stone, that is why I harvest when I harvest, and it is also strain dependant, as far as how long the plant will survive to give the trichs time to develop. I also prefer less red hairs so I maybe harvesting a bit early, but thats what the masses want ;)

I'm with you on preferring an active high. What do you look for in trichs when you harvest with that in mind?

I'm po'd b/c I had another one from the same seeds that had a much better effect and the buds were bigger than this one AFTER they were dried! But, newbe mistakes lead to the destruction of the cuts from it.

I think I could safely say that if you let your weed go a full 8 weeks... you will have some danky shit

Im a knock me out sleepy bud person so when I harvest it's 60/40 cloudy amber

:yeahthats

I am like THE FUCKING MOST HYPERACTIVE PERSON ON PLANET EARF (yes, da hole earfz)

so I HAVE TO harvest cloudy/amber or I'm up all fucking night (like now cuz I had to chop a branch a week ago at day 35 cuz I'm out)

so I'd say it TOTALLY depends on what YOU are after personally in your final product, as to WHEN you harvest.

the guy who posted:
clear= racy
cloudy=head
amber=body

was absolutely correct, and I'll add for indicas:

DARK amber= sleeping pill weed (just wish I HAD some right now)

Well, she's down, chopping with all that in a scrog wasn't so bad, the screen actually made it easy, I'm just leary b/c the only time I haven't hung the whole plant I had bad results. Here's a pic of the other pheno that I didn't get a clone of and you can see why I'm a little upset about the genetics. My other pic didnt really show it but not only are the buds smaller but there arent any that are all clumped together either which is much more meaningful in the overall yield i think. Any way, enjoy:

I NEVER hang the whole plant anymore,....here's what I do:

chop plant, stick in a bucket with a quart of water at the bottom (keeps it stiff while I trim), then I trim the plants down to nugs, I get as much stem off as I can,....then it's onto the sweater drying rack(s): (this is the above mentioned speedy ass 35 day trim I'm smoking)

(like in the pic @ target=$6, and they STACK!!) with a fan on them for a couple of days,....then I turn off the fan and let the nugs sit for a couple more days until I just have a little stem wiggle left in the very tip, then into the airtight canisters, where the curing begins,....after a month in the jars (opening and fluffing daily) I get the sweetest mildest smoke, even milder than when I would hang whole plants and take 2 weeks to dry, THEN another week finishing, and THEN a month in the jars (and sometimes mold on you)

I have been harvesting/drying/curing like this for nearly 5 years now, and until someone comes up with a way that gets BETTER smoke, FASTER,.....I won't switch back to hanging whole plants

Sorry, but i would never put a fan straight on the bud. In my opinion, the longer you dry a bud the better the smoke. Quick dried bud is harsh to smoke. I dry mine in a tent on drying racks for 7 - 14 days(till they are surface dry) then i start curing in my 420 Jars for about a month(letting out air a couple of min. a day) Works for me, but not saying that it is the perfect way.

The whole trichome color = type of high thing is nonsense.... IMO, of course.

If you want a different type if high, you grow a strain noted for that type of high until it has reached its maximum potential.

If you want a sour food do you drink "over-ripe" milk or do you eat a ripe lemon?

When trichomes are amber, it means they are degrading. Losing potency. Past full potential.

The usefulness of these amber trichomes is in determining when the plant has maxed out production.

When the oldest trichomes start to amber, it is an indication that production has slowed or stopped. At that point, the plant will have the most number of mature, ripe trichomes and will be at its maximum potential.

Ask yourself:

If you had something with an unknown volume and you had to fill it, how could you be sure you've filled it completely?

The answer is that you fill it just until it overflows. Once that happens, you know the vessel is holding all the water it can.

I believe amber trichomes serve the same purpose.

Then again, I have been wrong before. Quite a few times in fact. I am always willing to examine my beliefs and change them if presented with sufficient evidence.
