I left seoul about a week ago and am slowly making my way across the world. I want to share with you a story about an elaborate bust here that involved the media and the police working together. My sources are local foreigners. I cant sight an article, because it is in korean.
About three weeks ago a news reporter(undercover) was hanging out with a couple of foreigners who have been in korea for a while. They, apparently really know about the market and have good connections... Everyone was really drunk, and the reporter started asking them questions about cannabis here, like how many people use it, how to get it, how it comes into the country, etc. So it seems that these guys dropped a bunch of first names of connections. Again no-one really knows exactly what happened. The reporter, after their drinking session(a past time in korea, its ok to get so drunk that you cant walk anymore and vomit on the street, but no puffing) went to the police told them what he had learned. The following day a big dealer, and a few people growing were caught. I think it was about 20 foreigners in all who were arrested.
So a week after this all went down this reporter did a huge story about foreigners using drugs in korea and causing lots of problems. Something along the lines of foreigners come to korea for easy money(teaching english) and to **** korean girls(kind of like a sport or something). Well the korean economy isnt so hot right now so this is just a tool to divert attention away from the real and serious problems.
Just wanted to share this with everybody, be careful in korea!
